Will older motherboard support newer GPU?

Hello,
My friend owns an old motherboard and has recently bought second hand Core 2 Quad. He is now looking for a new GPU to replace the weak GT 430.

The Motherboard in question is the: ASUS P5KPL-AM SE (LGA 775)

We were looking to buy GTX 460 1GB or AMD HD 7770. Will either of those work on the motherboard in question, or should we be looking for older/newer generation GPU?

Any help is appreciated.

Any GPU will work as All are PCI - E the only Limitation is the PCI-E Slot bandwidth Newer Board has higher bandwidth as campared to old one so your new card will work on lower bandwidth but it will work
and make sure you have sufficient PSU wattage for new card

I agree. Also, keep in mind that for a single modrn gpu config, putting the gpu PCIe 3.0 x16 vs PCIe 2.0 x8 does not affect performance (maybe 1-2fps).

Yes but getting newer card is a waste for OLD PC like your old cpu will bottleneck your GPU
