Upgrading Motherboard questions

Hello all,

My ASUS motherboard has an i7 processor in it. It was built by Overclockers back in December 2010 and the system name was "Ultima Viper".

What I wanted to know (as i've been updating parts lately, like I added a new graphics card and more RAM) is if I bought a new Motherboard, would I be able to take my i7 out of my existing mobo and put into a new one?

What i7 processor ? There's a lot of them for different sockets. There's also a matter of RAM that may not be compatible.
What's the reason you are upgrading/changing MB ?

Thanks Mike for replying - Ii'll find out when I get home.

I feel like my system is a bit sluggish even though I have 16GB memory and windows 10 on a Samsung SSD.

Not sure If I have put in conflicting hardware maybe?

But the MOBO is like 7 years old now so I figured it might be good to upgrade and grab a gaming ASUS mobo? (as I only use my pc for music/gaming).

My RAM is all DDR3 so I'd probably get a cheaper one I saw on Amazon.

What sort of stuff would you want to know to give your opinion?

Exact processor type is essential to know. Your present MB too. Beside MB being broken some way and changing it because of that there are very few things you'd need new one for. For instance, if you want to run dual GPUs, need more features, or your processor can be overclocked but not because of MB. Otherwise, within same CPU socket, it will not bring you any higher performance.

You have a very good MB for that processor, changing to another one would bring you nothing. The MB you linked to has altogether different socket and you can't put your processor in it. Here's list of processors that fit in your MB: https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P6X58DE/HelpDesk_CPU/ best processor for it is one at the bottom with progressively lesser ones going up if you wish to go that way. I have no idea about their prices or your budget so......

Thanks Mike, it had some updates on the ASUS website for my mobo but they won't install because of windows 10 which is a pain (even though i'm clicking the windows 10 64bit download!) so i'll email them about that.

This is my full PC spec below, do you think there is any point me changing/upgrading any of it? How would I know if anything does not like working with other components?

Well, since that is a dead end (not produced or updated any more) your only other option would be to get a processor, MB and memory of newer generations. Rest you could keep as it is.

One last question - do you think it would be worthwhile going back to Windows 7 to do the MOBO updates or would that be totally pointless? (and I assume I wouldn't get to switch back to 10 again after, not that I would miss it!)

I doubt that there are any worthwhile "updates"(if you mean drivers) for that MB even for W7 because that happens mostly within first few months or maybe a year until they perfect them. If you mean upgrades for BIOS, that's not OS specific, it's just firmware that could be installed even without OS or even hard drives.
