Computer freezes then only turns on for a second.

I have been fighting this problem for 8 months now. My computer will freeze at random. Sometimes during gaming, sometimes while idle, sometimes while surfing. Occasionally a loud noise will be playing like it was a sound problem. Sometimes it makes no noise when freezing.

One thing happens always however. It requires me to hold down the power button or cut off power to the computer to get it to shut down. The power button at this point will not restart the computer. I have to cut power to the unit, let the power drain completely. Then when I reconnect the power and turn the unit on it starts for one second and shuts back down. I have to repeat the cut power / restore power cycle each time to get the power button to give me that one second.

I have not detected any real heat issues by feeling the area around the processor and video card at the time of freezing. Nothing appears hot although the power source has a cover over it but the cover isn't warm either..

Usually after several days of leaving the computer cut off completely from power. I turn it on and it works again. Sometimes it works for a few hours. Sometimes it works for several days. then it will freeze again out of the blue. Trouble shooting this is so hard. How can a computer work perfectly even under a heavy load and then suddenly not work?

I do get a Kernal 41 error but that is not surprising considering the sudden shutdown. I followed some of the suggestions on windows 10 for kernal 41 errors. Power settings and sleep mode settings to no avail. I have installed and uninstalled ram and checked all connections.

I am thinking this is likely a hardware issue even though I hadn't added anything new lately.

I have a Assus x99-a mother board
intel i7 5820
16 gigs of corsair vengeance ddr4 3000mhz ram
evga geforce 980ti
evga supernova 1050 gold power source
samsung ssd 1tb
samsung m.2 drive 512 gb
phanteks enthoo luxe full tower

Any thoughts would be helpful. I was hoping this would be software related but I am not sure what to do. If I have to buy parts and start replacing them one by one trying to get to the bottom of this what would you start with? I was thinking power supply and then motherboard?

Thank you in advance!

Solution
well yes I just put a new one myself but there should be no difference in the version of windows its an ASUS board and should be just a matter of hammering the delete key. If that does not work then there should be a set of three pins with a jumper which says clr cmos near the battery and that will reset everything to default and should boot to bios.
BIOS
have a fresh formatted FAT32 USB stick download the bios from motherboard manufacturer stick the bios you just downloaded on the USB stick recommend at least 2 bios's re-boot press the delete button repeatedly to get into bios select system update bios select usb device flash it leave it to do its thing then you should be good with new bios
if done wrong will brick your motherboard

I thought I had upgraded them until I looked at the version. So I downloaded the files and tried several restarts trying to get into bios while holding the F2 or delete keys. Little did I know that wouldn't work to get into bios in windows 10.

After several restarts I read that you have to hold shift while shutting down in windows 10 to get into bios. I held shift and shut down and sure enough the computer will not restart. Perhaps this is the issue? I am also going to install a new battery into the motherboard just to be certain.

I am just curious does your flash drive have to be empty for updating your bios?
