How Well Will The GTX 1070 Hold Up?

Can the GTX 1070 game on 1440p for the next 5 years?

Where i live, this stuff is crazy expensive (Approx ~1200 USD for a 1070) and i cannot really upgrade every gen, nor can i easily buy used stuff, so i would likely stick with it for the next 4 ~ 5 years, so this is a serious investment. I just want to know how this thing will hold up at 1440p. I don't essentially play at maxed settings & happy with mid ~ high setting as long as i can get ~45 FPS. I also don't play the latest games, i usually wait 2 years before i play a game. so in 5 years i will be playing games released in 2019/2020 at best.

also is it worth waiting for the volta ? when is the release date ? since i am going to stick with the card for a long time, i'd rather wait for volta if its nearby (i can easily wait 6 ~ 8 months).

PS: am not stuck in a vicious endless wait cycle where i usually just wait for the next best thing, cause i usually upgrade on fixed intervals (every 5 ~ 7 years, or whenever my pc breaks.)

AMD is not an option cause i have a GSync 1440p 144hz IPS monitor and would like to fully utilize it.

Thank you.

Well based on the Vega 64 reviews, I'd now definitely recommend on waiting for Volta next spring. What a massive disappointment.

Five years is likely going to be stretching expectations. Nobody has a crystal ball of course when it comes to future game demands on hardware. What we can do is look back on previous releases. Some games are sloppy coded like Dues Ex and Watchdogs 2 which are Crysis-like GPU killers (not even hitting 60FPS at 1440p). In other games, a GTX 1070 is more than enough for 1440p.

If I were you, I'd wait for Volta. On paper according to some, it's expected to be about 35-40% more powerful than comparable Pascals. Of course only reviews will really tell the truth. If you can wait, wait.

i sure can wait, am not in a hurry, but volta have me in shadows with no news whatsoever which makes waiting a bit anxious which is why i also inquired about volta :)

How do you know that?

Even if its not Volta, it could be a Pascal refresh. Nvidia have been fairly consistent with their release dates with new gpus.

I don't. It's just a guess based on recent history of the past two generations releasing the Titans first and then the high end consumer grade GPUs next. However if Nvidia was going to do a Pascal refresh (similar to what they did with Kepler with the GTX 6xx to 7xx series minus the K110 GTX 780/780Ti) they'd have already done it. They didn't do a refresh of Maxwell either (9xx). Release dates of the high end Keplers, Maxwells, and Pascals:

GK110 GTX Titan - Feb 2013
GK104 GTX 770 - May 2013 (GK104 GTX 680 released Mar 2012)
GK110 GTX 780Ti - Nov 2013

GM200 GTX Titan X - Mar 2015
GM204 GTX 980Ti - Jun 2015
GM204 GTX 980 - Sep 2014

GP102 GTX Titan X - Aug 2016
GP104 GTX 1080Ti - Mar 2017
GP102 GTX 1080 - May 2017

I dont think them dates are right?

And they did do a maxwell refresh, the first maxwell chips were the 750 and 750 ti GM 107. They then refreshed the architecture to make the GM20x chips for the 900 series.

LOL well this time I know I have it right. Nvidia's history is more convoluted than trying to herd cats. In any event, there likely will not be a Pascal refresh this late in the game and I'd put money on a Titan class Volta being introduced before a GTX class.

How long a GPU will last depends on how demanding you are. If you want the same performance as you get now, then no GPU will provide that, but if you're happy to dial-down the quality and frame rate then it could do the job.

I guess you could say that three years is an "average" lifespan for a GPU.
