I'm using my PC only for gaming (at 1080p) and i'm going to upgrade my GPU to a 1080, but my i3-2120 wouldn't be a good friend to it. Naturally, the socket will change so i'll have to upgrade my mobo as well, which i'll look into later (though if you know any, i'll go with the cheapest one that will do the job).

The question is, what is the best CPU i could afford with as little money as possible that will let the GPU do its job well?

You're probably better off getting a 1070 instead and using the money you save to get a new mobo, cpu and RAM

The answer is it depends on the games you play.
Some games are graphics limited like fast action shooters.
You may be ok with your I3-2120.

Others are cpu core speed limited like strategy, sims, and mmo.
Multiplayer with many participants tend to like many threads.

My suggestion is to go ahead and buy your new card first and see how you do.
I assume this will be a three tier upgrade:

If you are looking for an upgrade with new parts, go with latest tech, either kaby lake or ryzen.

A processor in the $200 category will likely be appropriate.
