Prolog:
So I've been having some issues where games like GTA V or Rust lag a lot, essentially FPS speaking. Other games look fine but some times, when there is lots of movement frames drop quite a lot or just random spikes such as in rocket league. I think I figured out why, quite soon after the GPU upgrade (from none to a GTX 960)... the CPU was bottlenecking the GPU given the 100%-CPU usage with a 60%-GPU usage in GTA (both the games are really unplayable).

Question:
I was thinking about investing on a AMD A10-7890K but I did not want to do it without knowing for sure that those games would be playable after that. Would this CPU combined with the GTX 960 give me a decent gameplay or would it just be a waste of money? Is it possible that it is something else rather than CPU bottleneck? Also, is there any better CPU that would fit the FM2+ socket that is compatible with the motherboard?

Note: I've checked the bottleneck on thebottlenecker.com and it gives me a 12% CPU bottlenecking the GPU.

Solution

Well an athlon 880k is the best you can do but it still won't fully fix your bottlenecking problem.

Pretty much your whole pc needs an upgrade so don't spend any on the fm2+ platform and move to a new ryzen or intel cpu platform. Also buying an apu whilst using a gpu is just throwing away a lot of money.

I know that the computer is really old and need a full upgrade but atm I do not own the funds to get a whole rebuild. I posted this thread to know if the CPU upgrade would "temporarly" fix the horrible gameplay that I am having and stop bottlenecking the GPU. Also, to know if there is another cheaper/better CPU that would make those games playable.

That 'bottlenecker' website is very misleading IMO. It doesn't take into account resolution, games or graphical settings so it is basically giving a blind guess.

What framerates are you trying to achieve/desirable? The A10 you thought of likely wont achieve 60FPS in those games.
Games usually prefer single core sped / IPC rather than multicore speed. Since your current CPU and the one you'r ethinking of upgrading to have practically the same single core speed, I wouldn't expect much of a difference.

I honestly would save up for a new platform. A G4560 is a decent upgrade (not great) + b250 mobo + DDR4 will cost $200 ($50 higher than the A10 CPU option). Though you could sell your current platform to make up a bit.
