Best thermal apply method for GPU?

So I'm planning to clean my almost full dusty ASUS Strix GTX 970 this week, and I have Arctic MX-4 Thermal Compound tube lay around on my other desk . I know I have to re-apply thermal compound if you are going to re-assembly the graphics card, but I don't know the best thermal apply method for the GPU. Should I spread evenly or apply a small rice peas in the center of the chip?

Yeah, I wish my GPU PCB were not covered in dust, and since mine does, I have to re-assembly it to clean it up. In addition, the heatsink outside and inside were covered in dust too.

Okay, I will try that first before re-assembly my GPU. But one thing I'm glad is that my GPU doesn't have thermal pad, so that one thing does not need to worry.

I did your method you suggested, and found my max load temp drop to 2C min to 3C max.
