The first one had issues optimization wise, and even years later, I had more issues playing first than second one. If you had to pick just one, I'd go for second one, followed by the first.
However, if you care any for the story (which has gotten increasingly confusing and convoluted over the years, granted), then playing first one first makes sense.

The first one has worked flawlessly for me on modern hardware, purchased through Steam.

Yeah I also purchased through steam, and it was a fairly new rig for its time (this was about 3 years back), but first one had...strange stuttering moments, weird graphical glitches at times. I remember playing it, incidentally, right after the second installment, and thinking, this is not nearly as smooth. I then went on to read why not, but there were so many comments about uplay and original game release issues years back, that i wasn't really able to find anything about the issues I was having specifically. In either case, I ended up playing 2, 1, brotherhood and 3 all in one giant vacation gulp so I was able to compare pretty well. Could have been something hardware specific, don't know, but that was my impression of the games.

Actually if I recall Brotherhood had a lot of issues for me compared to the other games. Lot of stuttering when I moved the mouse.

I'd recommend getting a package if they offer it. When they do go for steam sales, they'll have a pack of bunch of AC games for a super discount. You missed the summer sale, but they have weeklong deals so put it on a wishlist and at least once a year, they'll offer discount on everything ubisoft and steam will notify you with an email.
