Only one RAM slot works, ignores others.

I am having an issue with my new build where only one of ram slot is working. After some experimenting, both sticks work, but only when in slot 4 (furthest from cpu). After trying just 1 stick in the other three slots, no bootup. I got on CPU X as I saw recommended in another thread and it is also only reading 8gb. Here is my build:

Intel i7 7700 kaby
8gb x 2 (16gb) Gskill aegis ddr4 2400
Gigabyte z270x ultra gaming
750w power supply

Any tips or reccommendation would be helpful.

Well, check for bent pins first as suggested above. You could have damaged the Integrated Memory Controller in the CPU, thus it is only recognizing the 1 RAM slot, but I can't imagine overtightening the heat sink could do that. Perhaps it is not evenly tightened.

I'll be able to check that in a bit. If it is my motherboard, I'm a couple days past the return policy. I could however return the ram pick up a 16gb stick. Any downsides to doing this?

A single 16GB stick will not run as fast as 2 x 8GB operating in dual-channel mode, but the difference may not be noticeable. Doesn't the motherboard manufacturer offer a warranty? If it is defective they should test and replace it. Are you talking about the 30 day return period that Amazon and others offer?

Yep, bought the board from Microcenter. I could go through gigabyte, however I can't go without a PC due to work. I'd need to ship the board to Cali and wait for a new one.

Back to the issue though, it is very possible that I over-tightened the heatseak. Could I expect other malfunctions in the future if I kept the board?
