Hi guys, I am a customer with optimum (my ISP) and am currently renting a modem from them and paying too much. I was thinking of buying an Arris surfboard modem until I realised that it did not have a hookup for telephone. If I was to buy one of these what would i need to buy to hookup to my telephone cable? Also does the Arris surfboard support Optimum? I currently have their supplied Arris all in one modem for internet and phone service.
Thanks

Your ISP should have a list of supported telephone capable modems.
Going with anything else is asking for a headache if it does not work.

I investigated this with Comcast and came to the conclusion that it was not worth it.
My monthly cost for modem rental was $10 and since telephone capable modems are expensive, in the $200 range, the payback seemed too long.

Your best option may be to not even use the phone option from your cable company. This is really just a special phone over the internet ..ie VoIP ...but it all built into the cable modem.

This is similar to things like magic jack or the many other devices. If you work at it you can use things like google voice which is free and a inexpensive hardware adapter that lets you use normal telephones rather than a ip phjone or a app on your cell phone.

You likely pay back any cost fairly quickly when you consider the extra charge the cable company is making for the modem rental and the monthly phone service they bundled into your internet bill.
