Hi there

disclaimer : i did check the other similar posts on the forum but ive yet to find a working solution

My main pc specs are : i7 4770 @ 3.4 ghz with 16gb ram and I'm using a Gainward Phantom 2gb Gtx 760.

Pc was working fine till I ran the recent Nvidia driver update on Monday and since then its been giving me some problems. My pc will freeze up and my display will go black after using the computer for like 10 mins or so, sometimes longer, it varies. For example I'll be browsing or watching a video and then bam, it freezes up. Thinking that it was caused by the driver update, I installed Display Drive Uninstaller (DDU) and did a clean install of the latest nvidia driver and also the previous version before the update. I did a startup repair, checkdisk, blue screen diagnostics and all came out with no errors whatsover, no bad sectors or anything like that. It works fine on safe mode though and didnt freeze up at all so I'm thinking my hard drives and all are still ok.

The fans on the graphic card still spins and is working fine and theres no overheating issues

I googled up the black screen problem for windows 10 and have followed all if not most of the suggestions out there but to no avail, the closest successful solution I managed to find which worked for most was performing a clean install with DDU.

Not sure whats causing the problem since I didn't add in any new hardware or software apart from the driver update. Any help would be much appreciated

Currently there is an issue with all of the 385.XX drivers and GTX 760. Many people have the same issue, including me. Switch back to 382.53, they are working fine.

Hi Mohan, thanks very much for the reply

Yup I've already done that as well, in fact I downloaded 2 previous versions before the latest updated one and installed them using DDU on a clean install, problem is still there unfortunately

Hi Mohan

these are my specs :

  • intel core i7 4770 3.4 ghz 8mb cache
    windows 10 professional
    kingston 8gb 1600mhz ddr3
    gigabyte h87m-d3h motherboard
    gainward gtx760 phantom 2gb

an update : I took out my graphics card and plugged in my monitor to the motherboard graphics port and so far its working fine. So Im guessing my graphics card is dead or dying (since im still able to boot into my desktop and do a few things before it freezes up) . My next step is to test out the card in another PC to see if it really is dead and not my other computer parts which is going bonkers

A PC can run without a GPU, however don't expect good performance at all. The classic way of troubleshooting faulty hardware is taking out each part one by one. If your computer continues to not freeze excluding the GPU then there's there is nothing else to blame on. What do you use this rig for? If for gaming then I would highly recommend the 970, I've had it for 2 years and have had no issues.
