Why my dad says that (no this is not an emotional question)

before we start, I'm Ivan, and i live in Indonesia.

I'm a freshman, and my college requires me to buy a laptop (im on multimedia course, it's like half-art-half-computer class)
i have a laptop, but it's a damn pentium, i can't do productivity with a pentium + integrated graphic + 100GB HDD and a non-activated OS

as later on i will require it for heavy productivity such as rendering, computer graphic, photo editing and stuff, I asked my parents for a new powerful laptop (Mac is pretty overpriced here so i asked for a gaming laptop instead, which somehow had good specs but still much cheaper than a mac) [no i won't game on it, at least not too much [probably when I'm outside waiting for my next class], my PC will do a much better job on it so this laptop's main purpose is overall for doing college stuff and bragging rights :p]
I do have a PC, but it's only a 2nd gen I5 which i know will not be too good for the college, and even if i upgrade it, i can't bring it around. (also refer to the problem below)

here's where the problem starts:
Next year, my parents might send me to America to study there instead of staying here, and they said that if it's really happening, they want me to buy laptop and build a new PC there instead of buying laptop + upgrading my PC now and then bringing it to America later on.

Now I'm really curious on the reason why I should do that? I mean, even if I'm moving next year, I still need a laptop now. I get it if it's about my PC, since the extra luggage would be really expensive, so im fine if they won't let me upgrade it, but why postponing the laptop too?

You've already answered your own question here:
"MAC is pretty overpriced here"

Prices are different in different countries. Most tech products are normally cheaper in the US. That's why.

No reason in spending more money on the same product, don't you think? You'd go there to study anyway, so your classes would really start only when you were there, therefore you won't need a powerful PC/Laptop now.

Two of the reasons i can think of :
1- If you wait a year , there will be new tech out and if you dont need it till next year anyway... might as well wait and get some better stuff (or current stuff cheaper)
2- It MIGHT be cheaper to buy the stuff in america. I know the pricing around the world seems to be very different

I live in the US. We have perhaps the best selection and availability of computer hardware of any nation on the planet. That's for both walk-in stores (known as brick & mortar stores) or online retailers. What I can't tell you is pricing in the US vs. Indonesia for the same product. That's something you'll need to figure out for yourself.

I know a lot of foreign students who come to the US for college in my city buy up all kinds of computer hardware and bring it back with them to friends and family. Engineering students specifically. Of course you'd need to look into the laws in your nation and make sure you don't violate any import regulations. Good luck!

I live in Canada, and I can tell Apple is expensive in all places if you compare it with your income.

Now to answer your question. Buy it from US and if you coming close to days like Black Friday, Christmas, or Cyber monday,.. and few more days you can get a great deals on electronics. For example, I bought an HP laptop during Christmas with @200 less than the original price ($700).

In short answer, buy it from US you will save a lot and you will get up to time specs or at least the year before (this year) for less price.
