I have a SSD and a HDD after i did a secure erase on both. My computer didn't boot no matter what F-key I push. I disconnected the HDD and the system booted then I reinstalled windows 10 on the SSD. I can't get my HDD going! I have been reading for a week on this problem. I think I need to install RAID first then OS, but not sure how to do this on a Dell XPS8700. Where did i go wrong? Thanks in advance

Is the SSD set as boot priority #1? Sounds like there's just conflict in the boot configuration and your BIOS is trying to boot from the HDD when it's attached.

It should be smart enough to skip past it to the next "bootable" option, but sometimes it just doesn't work.

Ensure the SSD is set to priority #1should fix the issue.

Ok, can we confirm something first.

If the HDD is connected, you cannot boot into the OS at all? That's what I was reading.

So, in order to boot into the OS (and be able to open Device Manager or Disk Management), the HDD isn't connected? Is that correct?

The boot priority is a list in the BIOS and not directly related to the SATA ports on the board.
Ideally you'd use port #0 on the motherboard, and have it listed as priority #1 in the boot options in the BIOS.

The BIOS change to have the SSD as #1 should be sufficient though, with the SATA port on the board not mattering much.

My first boot is " Master Boot Record" not a SSD my 2nd in my CD-ROM. My first Boot should say Samsung SSD PM 830 mSATA 256GB...right? Because that is what it is my missing HDD is Seagate S1E25772
