10xx cards don't have any analog video outputs at all, only digital. If you want to use vga then you need an active DVI to VGA adapter

you can also get a hdmi to vga or DP to vga if you wish. key is that it MUST be an active adapter to work. the thing has to convert the digital signal to the analog signal your monitor uses.

depends on what you buy. dvi-d can carry a better resolution than vga for sure. hdmi and display port are even better. if you're gonna buy new, then an hdmi or display port is what you are looking for. dvi is also getting to be old tech and should be slowly dying as well. some newer cards have even dropped this output and only have hdmi/dp ones.
