Well, the title says it all. My old 9600GT Is overheating big time. I was playing GTA V a couple years back with it and I noticed the game kept getting a little more sluggish after roughly 10 minutes of gameplay. Eventually, i looked at my GPU temp and HOLY BALLS, 100+ CELCIUS! I literally unplugged my pc once I saw that and so since then I've never used that 9600gt anymore.. today I finished a budget build as a secondary pc but I kept noticing how freaking hot the heat pipes and grille kept getting after 20 seconds of desktop staring. I've already replaced the thermal compound a while back with Coolermaster HTK 002 paste, But Its just the card making insane amounts of heat. It never did before! Please help.

If your sure the thermal paste was done properly and the heatsink was reinstalled properly, then it would appear that the GPU is overheating internally due to failure if nothing else is apparent to you. I presume the heat sink is cleaned of all dust, oils, and dirt. Can you link me to the exact card you have? Or state the exact model of the Asus 9600GT?

the only thing i can find on it is the serial number or something: 85C0AI111847. It's the Asus GeForce EN9600GT Silent 512MB. I got a replacement Powercolor Radeon HD 4850 1gb for it in my secondary pc, but i still like the 9600gt for our home pc which is running on integrated HD graphics, mainly because the 9600GT is passively cooled.

3 months later, he responds.. lol. Must have taken a long nap.
This must be your card.
Any chance that the heat sync wasn't re-installed correctly and perhaps isn't making good contact with the GPU's heat spreader?
