Pentium G4560 Same Performance as i7-7700k in 4k Gaming?

Hi All,
I just watched a video comparing the Pentium G4560 (2c/4t) @ 3.5GHz and the i7-7700k overclocked to 5GHz and the results were quite unexpected - at least for me.
The G4560 was on par with the i7-7700k in average fps in almost every single game.
How can that be? I know that the G4560 is a great CPU, but it's still a budget one.
I was thinking that it was bottle necked by the GTX 1070 he used to test, but still, I don't understand how a Pentium could perform the same as an i7, which is clocked higher and has double the cores. As i understand, most games can utilize 4 cores.

Here's the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BDG-dQsHymE

For older less thread intesnsive games the G4560 will stand up well, but these games are rarely cpu bound anyway,
as the average number of cores rises, so will the software that utilizes that number of cores, so although the G4560 is great value - it's gaming potential in the future is limited.

Ahh so basically they're using the onboard video - so both are massively GPU bound,
who would honestly use a 7700k without a dedicated gpu?

There are scenarios that could have them performing similarly...

Use of a pathetic GPU, such as onboard graphics, or , a very weak GTX1030 or similar....; testing of the GTX1030 at 1080P showed no ffurther appreciable gains in framerates with CPU increases above an R3-1400 or so....becuase th card is running as fast as it can, so further CPU increases are wasted.

To those who didn't watch the video...
The guy tested both CPUs with a dedicated graphics card - the GTX 1070.

If above 1080p, the CPU doesn't make a big difference, could you say that this Pentium can handle 4k?

Exactly.

Put a ford fiesta up against a Ferrari but both cars can only use 1st gear. = Not much difference.

as I said, when games start really utilizing the power of more cores the G4560 will fall well behind, but for now its a great budget cpu for the short term.

People keep throwing around this argument although this has already happened many years ago...
Every halfway decent console port from the ps3/xbox360 era has at least three demanding threads, every console port from ps4/xbone has at least four, every crytech engine game uses 6 threads.
If you use a nvidia card with ps4/xbone ports than nvidias threaded optimization can easily add another 4 demanding threads.

Consoles have killed the demand for high powered CPUs for gaming, every game coming out these days is heavily oriented towards high graphics, it's incredibly unbalanced.

Correct - but isn't this purely because the cpu's in the current consoles are weak.

the fact is though, developers make games for the platforms that make money, purposely putting huge loads on the cpu for pc builds and not for the consoles would be a development nightmare.

Maybe if there were enough (or any?) developers that were pc only then would we actually get games that USE all that power???? - probably not... - The fact is, a huge percentage of pc gamers are still using pretty poor cpu's too, thus they would be cutting out another percentage of the potential market...

So it's not just because of console hardware, it's down the painfully long transition of the market average having more cores.

With Ryzen likely to be in place for the next consoles we should see an evolutionary shift into games that are more likely to push higher cpu loads when that cycle starts.

Back in the days people would upgrade their PCs because new games would start to run very badly.
This doesn't happen anymore because all the focus is on graphics, with as you said weak console cpus.
Even if they put ryzen in the next consoles ( ... in 3-4-more years? ) they will also put graphics in it,the consoles have to be small so they will have the same problem as with the consoles today, you have to limit the power the cpu and or the gpu get's so you don't get overheating.
Future consoles will continue to be very cpu weak and very gpu strong, there is no way for this to change.

So if a ~ $70 CPU will keep you gaming for 3-4 years then it fulfilled it's purpose, cheap gaming for an adequate amount of time.

Agreed. Very true.

I don't agree with you on "future consoles will have very weak cpu's" - Look at the previous gen, ps3's cpu was actually a very capable processor at the time. it's only this generation that has relied very heavily on the gpu. - If ryzen is indeed the cpu of choice for the next gen consoles then we WILL see a shift towards more cpu intensive titles,

As the baseline moves so does the minimum requirement across the board.

But yes, it's cheap and it works for now, and will for a good few years. -

He was focusing on the max FPS.

Look at the Min FPS, that's were the difference really was except for DOOM.

However we really don't know what the settings were on the games other than the resolution.

For all we really know they could have been different in every game for the different CPU's.

And I am sure the GTX 1070 was bottlenecking the I7 7700K.

Also it seems the reviewers adjust settings to "COOK" the results to what they want them to be so take most with a grain of salt.

Seen this way too often so I really don't pay much attention to most of them.

Especially these days.

I normally look for 3DMark scores because they can't cook those and get a valid score and or they will show up.

You should see the comment section, the guy is obviously biased and at times is rude. He insists the pentium is fine for 4k@60hz gaming, but in reality it is already behind the times, slightly bottlenecking in 4k with a freaking 1070 (look at min framerates and how bouncy the Pentium is). Next gen's games will crush the Pentium.
