Where is CrossFire/SLI going?

Hi guys, the last week I've read articles that put in question the future of CrossFire/SLI. Apparently AMD hasn't been talking about it much in their press conferences, phasing it out I guess?, and NVIDIA left it out on the GTX 1060, among other things - which really sucks. 'Cause you know sometimes down the line you can get lucky and get a really good deal on a second card from a friend or Amazon/Ebay. And this can improve your system for a while longer. So what's the deal? Is it just business, trying to get you to buy more expensive cards? And Vulkan/DX12 is supposed to better handle dual-card setups? Thanks guys.

Yes, there are really so few using it. Here is an article from 2015 saying that data shows 300,000 people in the world are running crossfire/sli.

It is just not a large enough segment for game developers to spend time one when they could be improving performance for everyone else. You also have to remember that consoles drive game development. Games are designed to run on consoles first, then they look at PC because PC gaming is a niche and sli/crossfire is a niche inside the niche of PC gaming.
It is not AMD or Nvidia. It is the game developers. There are so few people running SLI that it is just not worth their time to optimize the game for SLI/Crossfire users.

I have SLI and I like it because I am a junky. But it is not very economical and is not for everyone.

Here is a really good write up on SLI and the post is constantly updated, so ignore the date. It has some really good information.

Why are they only now abandoning it? Are there really so few using it now, and not a few years ago as well? I guess what I'm asking is, why now?

That sucks. As an enthusiast CrossFire/SLI was perfect. Now, do you think dual-card setup will be phased out entirely or just limited to the high-end cards?

But if Vulkan/DX12 makes dual-card setups overall better, do you think there would be a resurgence for it?
