(since my last active thread in Tom's Hardware was like a year and more? i hope i can be with the community here~)

Since my old AMD Sempron 140's motherboard died, i upgraded my desktop to Intel core i3-2120 (3 years ago) just because in the dire of needs to have more threads)
have to say, while i3 is a dual-core, having 4 threads help me most of the time with most pc stuffs. (although my netbook Atom N570 is similarly 4 threads but sluggish :p )

Now, i've been into RPCS3 emulation and video conversion and making and my i3 is not enough for me now. (though gaming is still good with modest setting)

PC spec:
Intel i3-2120
MSI B75M-E33
6GB DDR3 1333 (2GB+4GB)
Asus Radeon HD 7770 1GB GDDR5 (i use 900p@60 or @75)(i do felt that 1GB is not enough nowadays)
Kingston SSDnow 120GB (main Windows hdd)

I've been waiting for Ryzen 3 to came out (and is out~) but realised my budget wont cut it (will explain later in next paragraph). but coincidentally, i found out Ivy Bridge based cpu like i5 and i7 isn't a bad upgrade from Sandy Bridge i3 as well (although is now considered old cpus)

My budget wont allow for Ryzen 3 even though is a budget oriented CPU, cuz i have to buy now mothermoard and also new DDR4 ram. Ryzen 3 is a quite cool cpu but, yeah... I do still like the Ryzen cuz now i get to overclock the cpu, just like when i was with my AMD Sempron (screw me for not having overcloackable intel motherboard and non K for all these years...)

I considered the 3rd gen i5 or i7 because i found great deals with these cpus (though is 2nd handed or refurbished OEM). also, the performance between the Ryzen 3/5 to the intels are very similar based on userbenchmark.com.
Plus, i dont have to change my motherboard and reuse my exist ram (though no overclock for me...)

intel i5-3570 = USD91 (online)(cheapest) or USD112 (with free resend & refund guarentee)
intel i7-3770 = USD154 (online)(still bid)

Ryzen 3/5 pricing, (add another around USD170 for AM4 mobo+8GB ram)
Ryzen 3 1200 = USD114 (online)(cheapest)
Ryzen 5 1400 = around USD185 (local store)

(im still questioning about the M.2 socket in AMD4 motherboards. does it uses one of sata socket slot or is independant or i can just use NVMe but not familiarised with the tech)

I would prefer the 8 threads i7-3770 and Ryzen 5 1400 for future proofing my setup but for now, i need a true quad-core cpu.

(though i rarely upgrade my pc unless is broken or for really the needs to upgrade)

To make everything short,
Should i use my existing socket platform and upgrade to 3rd Generation Intel i5 or i7,
or
Should i wait for my budget to get loose and upgrade to AMD Ryzen 3/5?
(with a possibly of my current i3 as a HTPC, i have lots of old spare hardwares~)

(if you are questioning about the Ryzen price, yeah, me too. dont know why is way above its MRSP pricing in US)

Its a toss up here. The Ryzen 5 1400 is great for the amount of threads you get, however I think the i7-3770 will have a higher frequency ceiling so technically it will perform better. Although the Ryzen 5 will run at a much lower TDP so it will stay cooler and use less power.

If I was picking, I would go with a new Ryzen 5 over a used i7-3770 non K version.

(i know, Ryzen ahs unlimited OC capabilities than the 3770 and i do want to be back to OCing days but welp, darn budget)

Ryzen 5 1400 has the exact threads and cores as the i7-3770. also Ryzen 3 1200 to i5-3570 (also, i regarded myself a bit unfair of comparing the new Ryzen against Intel line up. i directly compare to number of cores and threads cuz is interesting and fair by threading. not directly to Kabylake though aha>>)

for now, heat and power isnt an issue so i just prefer whatever my motherboard can go (i believe is 95W)

i was too a bit concerned about used cpu but used are still good (and cheaper, i guess), especially the seller (shop) tested them.
i wished for a K only if my current board can overclock...
of course, i would rather buy Ryzen platform than getting the K edition and buy a new motherboard (though that means my current i3 would be a second pc i can do for HTPC)

I would go for Ryzen 3 or 5 but my budget wont allow this, especially to buy another motherboard and DDR4 (adding up a lot, especially if i need B350 chip for OC). i thought that the i7 or i5 would be an ideal for keeping my current setup (plus i dont have to mess up with Windows activation, and workaround with my dual boot Win7)

I would take 2-4 weeks to find as good of a deal as you can on an ivy bridge i7 (make sure your board will handle it first).

Then save up funds for at least a ryzen 5 build in the future.
Too bad, found that shopping online locally is like, a very hard way to find stuffs, i even found out that most online store still selling the old i7-2600k like its original price... only 2nd handed or 'refurbished' cpu are cheaper (and the cheapest i found)

Seriously though, i would take Ryzen if i could afford now. though the deal i found with i7 and i5 are like the cheapest i could find (and still keeping my platform).
(and will try to find workaround running Ryzen with Windows 7 32 bit for dual boot purpose)

hmm, i should just, wait for my budget (maybe for 3 months) to get afford for Ryzen...? or go straight for i5-3570 now (though i think would be a not the best choice since now with Ryzen, every chip is now a war lol)

PS, since the new Ryzen has new stuffs and maybe interesting and future proofing. but for now, im running a lot of hard disk (all slots are full) and except if i use the X370, i may only limited to 4 sata slot... (although all are Sata 3, blame me for using lots of small space hard disk)
