In order to save money, I have decided to buy an old used workstation pc with a 3rd gen or 4th gen i5-i7 CPU and 8-16 GB ram. I plan to take the motherboard out, put it in a nice case, add a new power supply, and install a GPU. There is one thing I am not sure about. If I install a modern graphics card in one of these old workstation motherboards, will it be fine or will the motherboard not support it? For example, I buy an old Lenovo desktop and install a GTX 970, will it work? (PCI power connectors are not my concern.)

I see, and that is a pretty nice price considering you're getting a 4c/8t CPU. In that case, yes, as long as the computer you're buying has a PCIex16 slot, pretty much any GPU will work with it given you have ample power

Yes, if it has the required PCIe slot. Motherboards like that are usualy propriotery, so I wouldn't be too sure if it would fit a "standard" case. The moptherboards in OEM PCs also tend to suck, as are OEM power supplys do. This means you can not oerclock anything on theat board and it will die faster/ be less stable than a motherboard you would buy and put a CPU in.
You might be able to get a respectable mothebroard and modern CPU for the price of the OEM you will buy. What is its cost?

I'm not worried about overclocking or being able to "fit" in a standard pc case because it can be dealt with later but what you're saying is as long as there is a pci-e slot on the motherboard it will work? Also the reason I am doing this is because I would save a lot of money. Money is my main concern. I cannot afford much. I have found a pc with an i7 3770 and 8gb ram, 1tb storage, windows 7 (I will likely upgrade it) all for $265 CAD. ($200 USD)
