Just idling my CPU, i7 4790k, is fluctuating at 77c to 100c doing nothing. I have a h100i gtx cooler from corsair, and its fans are working, all my fans seem to be working. I have a total of 6 fans including the two on the h100i. My CPU still runs at 100c and wont go lower then 77c even at idle. When i run any game it starts to stutter and lag to the point i cant play it.

At first i though something was wrong with my HDD as thats been making a funny sound. Just seems to me this build is breaking down and i dont have the mean to replace. Without a comp i might as well sky dive of a building, no chute needed. My family also keeps it 78 degrees in the house but i have a big fan on me and the comp. Not sure what could be making the PC overheat so much.

Can anyone give me some advice?

After Tweaking power managment, fan speed, and pump usage on the H100I ive managed to get the temp down to 60-68c. Is this decent for idle or should it be lower?

Solution
60-68°C idle is way too high; your cooler is not installed correctly or the pump isn't working as well as it should. With that cooler the CPU should never reach 100°C even when running Prime95 Small FFTs.

You guys are correct. I read another thread on here telling the OP to change out the h100i for his stock i7 fan. This dropped my temp to 30-33c idle. Added two more massive fans on top of the PC for support. One is an intake, and the other an outtake to keep the air circulating.

Very happy i found the answer here, very happy i solved the issue without having to drop 200 bucks, but very upset my water cooler just ate s@#t and im out 200 bucks. Unless they will RMA but even then id rather keep my fan set up. Maybe RMA and then sell it.

First time i tried water cooling, and it seems it will be my last. It kept telling me the water pump was active and it seems to be dead. So the software kind of lies to you. Which is dangerous.

Thanks for the help and info.

OK mine does hit 80-100c when i run prime small. But it idles at 30. SO how can i cool this system other then wrap it in ice. I live in the desert where temps hit 100 easy, its 80 degrees in my house, wtf am i suppose to do i cant afford to blow processors out over and over.

Unless it's out of warranty, RMA the H100i cooler. When working properly, the H100i is much better than the stock cooler. Your CPU won't blow with the stock cooler, but it will throttle when it gets too hot and its life will be shortened. Ideally you want to keep it at 80°C or less, but exceeding it once in a while isn't dramatic.

OK thanks for the info, right now I'm going to call them Monday, but I tossed the box, I'm hoping they will still take it back.

Top fans should be both exhaust.
Front and side fans are intake.
Rear is also exhaust fan..
