Reference vs aftermarket and case air flow

How has performance been on the reference cooler on FE cards as of late? They don't perform as well as the AIB coolers(is the gap even that big?) from an individual standpoint, but the latter does so at the cost of screwing with the airflow and heating up just about everything else in the case! It's a tradeoff really. Is the little extra gpu performance worth the small increase in case, and inevitable cpu temps?
This was more a complaint aimed at aftermarket coolers rather than an actual question. I'm beginning to think no, and may get FE/reference type cards from now on.

Any half decent case with proper airflow will easily manage the heat dumped into the case from the aftermarket cards, if this was a true issues nobody would ever buy them. Additionally, the extra heat in my opinion is well worth the potential gains (and much quieter operation).

The only time I recommend reference cards is in a compact system, with little room for airflow through the case, and/or between the cards.
