Hi,
I've just finished upgrading a PC. After getting passed lots of issues I got everything working today and then noticed my processor temperature was shooting up and down while idle for no apparent reason.

I researched the cause and discovered the i7 7700k has a major issue with temperature spiking and intel basically said don't overclock the cpu because it wont be able to handle it. Before I chose the i7 7700k I was debating on whether or not to change to AMD and get a ryzen CPU.

This i7 issue has put me off using the processor, so which ryzen cpu would be the best to go for? I'll need it for video editing, photo editing & gaming. By which is the best, I mean which is the best value for money, are some of the models not worth the extra cost.

I was thinking the 1600x,1700 or the 1700x. Any ideas?
Also if there is a fix for the 7700k temp spikes please let me know, I've not found anything yet.

thanks

The spiking issue is well documented and is caused by sensor issues and the processor voltage. It has nothing to do with cooling. It can run a modern game on ultra and be at 50c.

It jumps back and forth 33c-75-33-80. When you run intel diagnostics the temps stay down, but when you exit the issue starts again.

Its well talked about and known by a lot of 7700k users from what ive seen. Intel were informed and never gave a fix.

I don't have that issue, but I guess all chips aren't
the same. 75C doesn't hurt the CPU. You still haven't said what cooler you are using.

If you went AMD, which would be better for video editing, I'd suggest the Ryzen 5 1600 or Ryzen 7 1700 depending on your budget. I'd overclock both of them. If you just want to spend more on the X versions that's up to you.

I'm using the corsair h100i v2. I've seen pages and pages about this temperature spike bug. The 7700k will sit at around 30c and randomly jump up and then go back down again, all while idle. Intel responds to all the complaints and basically tells everyone to not overclock.

It isnt down to poor cooling because I rendered a video it went to about 70c, then played a game it went to 50c. This bug just makes it jump up at random times and then go straight back down again. I know 75 wont damage anything, but who wants a processor that randomly heats up to that while you're not even using it.

Doesn't really matter. Unless it reaches 105c you are fine. Just keep using it or return it.

Is it not just because the AiO ? AiO's have to increase pump speed and the sudden spikes could be too quick for the AiO to respond. Idk, just my thinking. If you had the pump going all the time would you still see spikes that high? But who would want to run the pump all the time..

Does it really matter? your cooling is good enough to get it to 50C while gaming.

Who cares what it does at idle. It's not getting hot enough to shut down or even in the danger zone.

Sounds like you wanted Ryzen all along and are having buyers remorse, and are trying to justify it.

Dude, just go get the Ryzen chip.

Who cares what it does while its idle? We both know if your current processor right this moment was jumping up and down 30c - 75c for absolutely no reason you wouldn't be happy. Intel sold a flawed processor and never fixed it so hundreds/thousands of users have to deal with it. No justification for a return needed, came here to find a fix or an alternative because I like hardware that works properly.
