HI all do not post very often but not sure what to do. I have a gtx 970 reference which is made by zotac which I bought from overclockers but I can get a cheap asus 970 but not sure if sli will work can anyone confirm which cards would work with mine in sli ive read some cards don't sli together because I don't want to buy a card it doesn't work nicely thanks in advance

Solution

There is no point in adding a third card. I run Sli'd 970's and three monitors, depending on the game it is possible to game on the middle monitor with something completely different running on the other two.
An SLI setup means double the power needed for graphics, double the heat, double the complexity for best case, less than double the performance to a decrease in performance depending on the game and how well it supports SLI. Any improvement is not worth the cost, IMHO.

The cards should work fine together however the speed of them is determined by the slowest card, this can be fixed by a minor overclock. Unless your getting that card for dirt cheap I would pass as there is less multi GPU support now. I had SLI from 2014 to now and recently upgraded to the better single GPU due to driver issues as well as loud fans due to increased heat.

If you still decide you want to utilize SLI then make sure your motherboard supports it.

Thanks for all the replys one of the main reasons I want to get another 970 is because ive never had a sli setup before my motherboard supports it but after hearing the problems not sure its worth it but still want to give it a go as I'm getting this card for so little but having a reference 970 with titan cooler and seeing all the issues with 970s and sli ill just have to hope it works and report back

I have a rm850 corsair will this be adequate and also if I ran the cards in sli for my main monitor and added any old graphics card to watch plex on and other stuff while I game would this work taking some of load from my main gpus

Now you are really talking diminishing returns. Adding a third card (even though not in SLI), adds more heat, more power needed, more complexity(especially if it is an AMD card) and more driver issues. The 970's in SLI are just not worth it IMHO, even if you are getting it extremely cheap. I certainly would not add a third GPU to the mix.
