Is any B350 motherboard good for overclocking ryzen 5 1600?

I want to lightly overclock a ryzen 5 1600 to 3.8Ghz - 4.0Ghz. There are a lot of B350
motherboards.

My question is:
Is any B350 motherboard good for overclocking ryzen 5 1600?

I notice that some mother boards have a "gaming" series version of their normal motherboards and I assume that it should be better for overclocking (There seems to be better mobo heatsinks). Not sure if heat sinks will help. However, they all do have the same chipset.

Since Ryzen hits a hard wall at 4.1ghz for an overclock I would not spend too much on a Ryzen board. The x370 boards do overclock better, but most of the time the b350 will do just as good.

Motherboards use a lot of gimmicks for advertising. Dont strictly think that a "gaming" branded board is better. Most of the b350 boards have the exact same features and quality. They are all over similar. I would look for a ATX board, has a decent RAM support list, and has NVMe M.2 SSD compatibility. Most of the b350 motherboards have those things.

I would by a mid price range board. I like the MSI B350 Tomahawk. Good brand, good support, good features, reasonable price.

I recommend the motherboard my brother got an GA-AB350M-Gaming 3 1400 the smaller version + Ryzen 5 like 2 weeks ago and he is very happy with it.

B350 has anemic VRM (CPU power delivery circuit). So if you plan to use max voltage to reach highest clocks and run some serious CPU load for long periods of time, B350 will simply not able to do that for 6-8 cores. the VRM will simply overheat in best case scenario.

Question..When you say B350 do you mean all of them or just the Gigabyte? thx

 


last time i checked, it was all of them. may be something changed since then.
but it only really apply to hardcore overclockers that will push ryzen 1600 or 1700 to ~4GHz @ ~1.4v and do things that seriously load CPU for long period of time. like at least 30 minutes.
in such situation the VRM will have to handle about 100A on output which is kinda too much for 3-4 phases. and last time i checked, the best VRM on B350 was 4 phases.

The overclocking limit for Ryzen seems to be more chip-related than motherboard-related. There are very few stories of Ryzen CPUs making it to 4.0 GHz, regardless of the motherboard chosen.

If you're going to spend the extra money for an X370 motherboard, do it because there is some feature of the board that compels you, rather than the hope of a better overclock. If you are looking for pure performance, then save the $100 difference between a B350 and an X370 and apply that savings towards buying a higher-level Ryzen CPU.
