I'm thinking of buying a new CPU because mine is outdated (i5 6400). I think I'll buy an AMD (either i5 7400/7500). Wich one should I get? I have a budget of approximately U$280-300. I'm thinking of getting a Ryzen 5 1500x or a FX 8350. What do you guys think?

Solution

Loading your games on an SSD will speed up load times, but it wont have an impact on frame drops. How much RAM do you have? You may want to consider getting 16gb, but you dont need more than 16gb.

What specific games...

Whatever you do, dont get a FX 8350. Your current CPU is better.

As for your other choices, I would not go for the 7400 or 7500 as neither of these will give you any noticeable performance increase. If you have a "z" board, then you might want to consider a 7600k or a 7700k. The 7700k and cooler will be more than 300, but you could get a 6600k/7600k chip and a decent cooler for less than $250. If you dont have a "z" board then you cant overclock but the increased base clock speeds of the 7600k/7700k will give you a nice bump.

While I like the Ryzen lineup, I would not go from a 6400 to a 1500x. A 1600 would be a better buy because you would see more improvement, but the 7600k still has better performance in gaming. If you like to stream or want to edit video, then I would definitely go for the 1600 and a decent b350 board.

Do you think I should buy a sdd instead?

My motherboard is LGA1151 H110 DDR4 GIGABYTE.

An SSD wont improve gaming performance. But it will make your PC run much better. Boot times and load times will increase exponentially. Putting your OS on a SSD is one of the better upgrades you can make to improve your overall computing experience.

The Samsung 850 EVO is probably one of the most popular SSDs on the market. If your board supports an NVMe SSD, then I would suggest the Samsung 960 EVO. It is only about $20 more than the 850 and is a little faster.

You did not provide the exact model of the motherboard, but I dont think this board will support the 960 EVO.

I would look at the Samsung 850 EVO. The Crucial MX300 is not as good as the 850 EVO, but it is pretty good for the price.

What do you think of upgrading my CPU to a Ryze 5 1600x and buying a 120gb sdd? Do you think I should do this or still buy the 500gb sdd?

I think the 850 EVO 500gb would be the best one. Do you think I should buy it or should I buy an Ryzen 5 1600x + 120gb ssd? I think the 500gb sdd would be better....

it' a good match to a 1060.

The reason for challenging this is so that you don't buy something you don't need.

What symptoms are you seeing that you think you need hardware to improve?

My games were taking forever to load and I had some frame drops. When I looked at the task maneger the disk was at 100% (and the memory is always high, it's at 47% now and I only have Google openned). Do you think I need an SSD too?

Loading your games on an SSD will speed up load times, but it wont have an impact on frame drops. How much RAM do you have? You may want to consider getting 16gb, but you dont need more than 16gb.

What specific games are you playing where you see the FPS drop? Some games like PUBG or ARK are poorly optimized and regardless of your system hardware, it will have framedrops.

If you think your PC is not performing as it should, then go to userbenchmark.com. It will run test all your hardware and compare it to other submissions. If something is not working properly, it will show up there.

I did a poorly explanation there, the frame drops are probably because of the disk. It constantly freezes and that's what makes the FPS drop to 1 or 0. I don't have much problems with FPS. In Rainbow Six Siege, playing on "High" gives me more than 60 FPS but the loading time will triplicate. That's why I probably need an SSD.

Sounds more like a dying HDD, games will happily work from a HDD, and SSD is faster but most of the time it is not required.

Agreed. Go spend $40 on a new HDD for your games and get an SSD for your OS. Spend the money you save on more games.
