So my computer has been restarting itself while gaming for the past year. This happens once every 2-3 gaming sessions, and usually occurs after a couple hours of gaming. It happens infrequently, but consistently enough that it really is starting to bother me. I've heard others having this problem and the solution being to change the PSU; I've done exactly this yet the problem still occurs. My temperatures are not abnormal while gaming either. Any advice?

Old PSU: Corsair AX760
New PSU: Corsair AX860
CPU: i7-4790k (idles at 37 degrees C)
GPU: GTX 980 (Asus matrix)
Mobo: Asus Maximus Gene VII
CPU Cooler: Corsair h100i
-2 fans for intake in the front, CPU cooler on top, one exhaust fan in the back

Solution
Ok this may be driven by a bad driver or BIOS issue, being that you replaced the PSU and the memory passed memtest. I would try clearing and reinstalling GPU drivers, and then try your other drivers as well. Also see if ASUS offers any BIOS updates for that board.

Barring that this may be a motherboard failure.

I'll log the CPU temps under load and run memtest86 and update you on both!

So I ran memtest86 and there were 0 errors detected and all tests were passed; I don't think memory is the problem.

In addition, while gaming my CPU and GPU do not pass 70 degrees C. What in the world could be the problem...

Run prime95 for 10 to 15 minutes while monitoring temps, see if it restarts or not. And also check if there are any errors. Download intel processor diagnostic tool (https://www.intel.in/content/www/in/en/support/processors/000005567.html) and run it and see if any error is reported. Also if you are using a UPS or spike buster, disconnect from there and plug it directly into the wall socket. Check whether the psu cables are properly plugged in the motherboard. Another most common problem with restarts is because of faulty usb ports or hdd. Check the sata cables; download HDDSentinel (https://www.hdsentinel.com/) and check the health and status of your hard disk drive. If you have any external hard disk drive plugged in, disconnect it for the time being.
If still the issue cant be resolved, try using just the iGPU and see if any crashes or restarts happen, and reseat the RAM, drives and see if they are properly plugged in.

This is very thorough! I will go through all of this until hopefully I find the problem. Thank you!

Check Windows event viewer in Windows and see what errors are being reported when the system restarts. Based on this it may be that your motherboard is failing. Post the errors here.

The "critical" event shown in the even viewer has an Event ID of 41, the source being Kernel-Power. What does this mean?

I can't post pictures directly on these forums, so I'll just type what is there:

Source: Kernel-Power
Event ID: 41
Level: Critical
User: SYSTEM
OpCode: Info
Task Category: (63)
Keywords: (70368744177664),(2)

In the details tab, there are two different types of these errors with slightly different info, which is:

BootAppStatus: 3221225684

OR

BootAppStatus: 0

Both types have:

ConnectedStandbyInProgress: false
CsEntryScenarioInstanceId: 0
BugchekInfoFromEF1: true

Some of the errors have this, while the rest have this as 0:

PowerButtonTimestamp: 131428070804213209

I will try to reinstall as many drivers as I can and will play a few games after to see if any restarts occur. Whether this works or not, I just want to thank you in advance for taking the time to help me with this issue. I'll update soon with results!

Update: This apparently has worked! I haven't had a single crash ever since I updated the BIOS and reinstalled my GPU drivers. Thank you so much!
