I was in the middle of playing a game when I thought I smelled something hot. Not quite "burning", though. But after I smelled that, my whole desktop shut off, and the blue power light was blinking on and off. That eventually stopped, but the computer won't turn on. I ended up unplugging everything and jumping my rtx 12v PSU. I plugged in the 24 pin power connector, and it turned on in a sort of idle state. I plugged in the 8 pin labeled "jpwr2", and nothing would turn on. None of the fans, or even the power source. I checked the processor, and there was no physical damage or burns. Can someone please tell me how I can fix this without buying new parts? I just spent all I could to upgrade the thing and get it how I wanted it.

Solution
there are cheaper options for 80+ bronze supplys that are sub 50 dollars. i just reccomended that particular one because of the features and the modularity.

evga makes the 750B its non modular but the internals are almost identical to the supernova G2. those run sub 50 dollars and are fish net sleeved to keep the rats nest down. not a bad power supply to be honest

1. Check the CPU fan. Make sure it's connected in the right header.
2. Test the PSU using a paper clip. (look it up on google)
3. Troubleshoot ram by swapping a single stick in all slots.
4. Short the mobo using a screwdriver.

I did the paperclip thing before anything else. The fan's plugged into the right port. It turns on with the psu fans when I turn it on without plugging in jpwr17, and I moved RAM around but still nothing. And what do you mean short the motherboard with a screwdriver?

Motherboard model? PC specs please. And by short I mean use a screwdriver to touch the +ve and -ve of the power button connector. See motherboard manual to find out the exact pins.

Nothing smells burnt, and it doesn't look like anything's melted... I only smelled something when it overheated, but like I said I checked the processor and it looked fine.

The motherboard is an msi 970a-g43 plus. As for the other specs I'm using an nvidea GTX 950 graphics card and a thermaltake TR2 430W ATX 12v 2.3 Power Supply.

seen this a lot actually.

1. are you 100% positive the pcie cable is plugged into the power supply properly (if modular) and in the correct plug. some PSU are known to have the exact same plugs for pcie as other ports for sata and will not boot if in the wrong connector

2. power supply 12v rail on the pcie is bad and needsa a rma or exchange or replacement.

jay from jayz2cents on youtube has seen this a lot with corsair and seasonics specifically. however he did have this issue with a customer build with a evga PSU as well

its a short in the board in the psu if the psu is aty fault and is a fail safe to protect the components in the system from catastrophic failure

Yes, I had it plugged in the same way it always was. Right now the only things plugged in are the 8 pin and 24 pin, and with the 8 pin plugged in, I hear the high pitched sound of power, but there's a slight click whenever I press the power button, and the computer does nothing. No fans turn on, nothing.

then you for sure have a power supply failure. thermaltake power supplys are pretty bad, they also have a horrible failure and DOA rate as well.

if i were you, id replace it with something like this
https://pcpartpicker.com/product/MfJwrH/evga-power-supply-220g20750xr

its fully modular, 80+ gold rated, and comes with sleeved cables from the getgo with the ability to buy other sleeved cable kits to match whatever. on the right day you can snag these for under 100 bucks. Microcenter just had a sale and these babys in store were 75+ tax, frys has them for 90+ tax, thats here in the states anyways. not sure about the rest of the grape but here they are probably the best power supply for the money with the highest rating id suffice for

Well....Guess I'm screwed then. I cant afford any new parts, and I most likely won't be able to for a long time. At least I know what the problem is.
