Hello TH forum,

I am looking for advice in purchasing a new mobo and cpu. My current mobo is AM3+ with a phenom II x4 cpu has died. It was picked up at a thrift store in an attempt to get me through school; it almost made it. My budget is ideally <$150, moving up to $200 if necessary/optimal.

Long term I would like to either upgrade my build to a moderate gaming rig or convert it to a HTPC (or give it to one of my kids) when I graduate pharmacy school in a year.

My primary question is whether I should be using a DDR4 or DDR3 mobo. I have 16 gb (two 8 gb sticks) gskill ripjaw ddr3 1600 and would like to use those, but I am not sure if that would hold me back too much. One example option I found was to use a Pentium G3258 with MSI H81M P33.

- graphics card is probably 8 years old so I am not worried about keeping it, but I wont be able to upgrade it either. (so maybe integrated graphics or a super cheap card option would be a good idea?)

- PSU is an 8 year old 600W, but works great

- Case - mid tower

- 7200 rpm 1 tb HDD and 500 gb SSD

- running windows 10 x64

I mostly use it for email/research/office. Dual monitors would be a perk, but not necessary. Playing minecraft and some mobas like League of Legends or Heroes of the Storm would also be a nice perk.

In summary, should I be considering an older DDR3 mobo/cpu with use of my current ram? Or should I upgrade to a newer DDR4 mobo/cpu combo and buy the cheapest ram I can find? No preference for intel vs amd. Hopefully I don't offend any fans, I just don't know any better.

I am really out of touch with current tech, so any recommendations or advice that I may have missed in my considerations is appreciated.

A system with DDR4 is the way to go. Not exactly because of DDR4 itself but because all new systems are using practically DR4 only and of course there's more future in systems like that.
