Random few second disconnects

Hello there!

For the past few months, I have had this following issue: randomly throughout the day (can happen anywhere between 0-5 times in 15 hours) my internet disconnects, followed by immediate reconnect.

My connection type is as it follows: the internet provider has ethernet cables brought to every appartment of the flat > that cable comes into the house > is connected to a router ( ASUS RT-912E, bought some 3 years ago) > 2 ethernet cables connect the router to my pc and my wife's.

What I've tried so far:

- we changed the main ethernet cable (coming into the router) since it showed heavy signs of wear on the protection
- checked lease time (is set to 12 hours in router settings)
- updated network adapter (Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller) drivers
- I have currently set up on both pcs an automated task on internet disconnect (opens a txt file) to be able to see at a glance if the connection was lost lately

What I am still trying:

- I can also connect to the internet if I plug the main ethernet cable (that goes into the router) directly into the pc; need to spend more time connected to the internet like this to check for disconnects with the automated task; this is still in testing since we won't have internet on the other pc, so testing time is limited as well as the occurance rate being low.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

LE: Currently no disconnect in 10 hours of using PPPoE connection (ethernet cable into pc, no router involved).
LE2: Interesting to notice that one pc getting disconnected from the internet does not imply the second one does aswell. Events occur on both, but seem independent.

I've noticed some similar behavior, but I get the feeling we're on opposite sides of the planet. :)

I can go for days and not notice it happening or it can happen a few times a day for several days on end. However, for me, when it does occur, all of my devices disconnect; both my PCs (Ethernet connection), my tablet, and my cell phone (both wireless) all lose connection.

Just an FYI, I'm using:
Comcast in Minnesota, USA as my cable Internet provider.
Motorola SURFboard eXtreme cable modem (Purchased and owned).
Linksys E3200 Router/Wireless AP.
