HI all

I need advice from an ICT manager who has done a IT 3 year plan i would like to know what you went through in regards to what you considered in making your plan, what things to look out for, etc sorry i am new to this area and would love to know as much as possible on things to look out for and consider when thinking of a plan to present to management.

Thank you in advance

Tread very very very carefully, is the only advice I can offer, think carefully if you want to risk your position as this is a very real possibility of an outcome.

To do a plan that is properly useful to the business, to my mind you have to start by talking to the business, find out what their issues are, remember ICT is a service department whose existence is to supply the rest of the business with a service that they need now and that they will need in the future, so doing this well and doing it quietly are not an option, unless the first 6 months of the plan is 'engagement'.

That's just my opinion though.

there are a few things any it people can do. 1. is use of bar code and spacy from people that make ccleaner.
start with finding out the spec of pc in house. there hardware and age. depending on how corp does there hardware inv for taxes (deprecation). pc more then a few years old should have been donated as a tax write off or sold. with barcode and database program you can search pc by os or repair. also need a database for software. the big guys if they find your using pritated or non paided software the fine is big. one other thing to check with software is what pc are used and ones that are not. the ones that are not used fined out why then move them. same for printers. some time one work size printer can replace 10-20 smaller printers. if it placed in the right spot. the job i had in it was getting new pc and updated software bugs out. with every work software like ms word and other work software every year there a new version that drops. some time with finance software you cant move the data base from product a to d. if it gets to old. the other big issue is servers and backups. drives do fail over time..but at some point you need to replace drives with a new matched set. or replace the server as it too slow. you want to have few back up plans. 1. yearly backup to tape or cloud or off site. speak with big guys and ask how much down time would kill the company. if they say a few hours could kill them....then they should be looking to rent a backup sever off site if there a fire or flood. the comp could rent few pc and space and use the off site server.
