The i5 is about 10% faster in multi core applications (like some games) and has the general advantage of beeing a real quad core. For everyday work like excel you will most likely not see any difference between these two.

In terms of upgrade path the i3 would be the better choise, as the architecture is newer and you will have the option of more mainboards that support them (because 3rd Gen Mainboards are going rare), as well as the option to go to an i5 or i7 of the 6-Gen Intel Lineup later.

So overall it's your choise but I would probably go for the newer tech.

I have an i5 3550 (albeit OC'd to 3.9GHz with a certain motherboard) and an i3 6100, hand in hand the two performs very identical in just about everything but the advantage the i3 has is the DDR4 memory over DDR3.

in my country i3 6100 is like 100 dollars i5 getting for 70 however i have also found a new deal of an i5 4590 with ram and mother board with a decent power supply and a cheap case plus hard drive for 250 dollars so which one should i choose also i3 is brand new box packed while both i5 are used. i am leaning towards an i5 because i heard some games need 4 cores to work and i want this pc to last me a new years as much as my xbox 360 (6 years) did without much upgrades so which cpu should i buy. also my gpu is an rx 460 4GB which was the best price to performance gpu available in my country 140 $ while 1050 ti is 230$.
