Hello

I have 7 years old, first Core i7 notebook. My notebook freeze sometimes, but only when I leave paused video, no matter if VLC or browser on Youtube.

My question is, what is responsible for HW decoding of video, CPU or graphics card? So i Know what I should replace.

I already replaced RAMs, so that is not the issue.

thanks!

It depends on the function you are using the video for.

Both CPU and GPU go into decoding video. Memory effects this as well but more so for editing decoding, not so much for just viewing.

If it is just a viewing issue. I would suggest updating flash player, java and video viewing programs, etc... and your browsers as well. You can also try to turning off advanced acceleration to test. This often causes viewing issues.

If it tends to happen more in browsers. You can choice to turn it off for browsers but leave it on for general use. Which you can normally do in the video options of youtube when you are watching a video.

I have everything upgraded, VLC, Chrome and Nvidia drivers (its NVM 5100M). It is freezing often but not always, and only when I leave video paused. For example I pause movie and leave, or start viewing web pages etc. It's just viewing, and this was not happening for 7 years just now. So what you recommend replace first, CPU or GPU?

thanks

Well you are using a laptop right? Most of the time you can't replace the CPU or GPUs on laptops as they are integrated. So not sure that's really an option.

Can you monitor your system to see what it is doing when the freezes happen? Check CPU and Memory are they maxing out? Check task manager, is it showing video "not responding" etc....

Of course I can replace CPU and GPU, otherwise I won't ask. Still I need to know, which one is decoding video, or how to find it. I can't monitor system because it freeze (the whole system) so I think any monitoring app won't have time to refresh before screen freeze.

Well for one. Many people dont know about integrated chips and simply think they can upgrade their laptop. In most cases, you cant, which is why I mentioned it.

Secondly, as I stated earlier, both CPU and GPU can effect hardware encoding. It would be hard for me or anyone else to give you a recommendation without being able to monitor readings when using encoding.

Only thing we have to go off of is your current specs. Please post them.
