Games causing Coolers to Stop and CPU Overheat

Hi all

I hope you can help me some-what as I literally have no idea and need some expert insight if you can please?

I've been running a game called Planet Coaster through Steam. The Cooling fans I have are on constant pretty much all of the time as the game is a CPU intensive game (running between 67% - 100% depending on what the game is doing). But, I've noticed that since an update to the game the other week, if I Alt + Tab out and load Chrome, all of my cooling fans seem to stop. Then, when I jump back into the game the coolers do not kick in again. This leads to an eventual CPU over-heat and only a hard restart (into BIOS POST due to CPU over temp usually) will restart the coolers and bring the CPU to temp again. This only happens when playing PlanCo, is replicatable on demand and cannot be replicated using any other game.

So, I was wondering - is it possible that there's something in the games architecture that is causing this issue or is it likely to be a local issue to my machine that I should be more worried about? I'm no expert in how games manage hardware etc..

My set up is:
i7 7700K, running at 4.2Ghz, not overclocked and will idle around [strike]67 degrees C[/strike] ** OOPS: MADE A MISTAKE: It's idling around 31 - 37 Degrees C *** and when playing PlanCo will settle about 74 degrees C (which is apparently normal for the 7700K) - this rises to 86 when the issue is present and I dare not take it higher than that in tests.
MOBO is the Asus Z170 Gaming running the latest BIOS, which has been the case since March, so that's not a change that could cause this issue
RAM is 32GB running at 2133Mhz (capable of 3400)
Graphics: Asus NVidia 1070 Turbo
Cooler is CoolMaster (water cooled, but unsure of the other details though) - No errors have been detected and it's working properly throughout other applications

I'm sure there will be many questions off the back of this that I've not included.. but thanks in advance!

Solution
Not every liquid cooler, especially those with small radiators, will cool as well as a conventional large heat sink/twin fan setup such as the Noctua NH-D15; but, then, not every case is wide enough for the D15's 165mm height...
It sounds like an issue with the game. Until they patch it only thing you can really do is use a program like Afterburner to set a custom fan curve and just set it to 80-100% fan speed while you game then manually change it back to auto when you are done.

Of course, if it is only happening in that exact game and no others.

Another thing you could do it try putting that game into Windows mode instead of full screen and see if it reacts the same when you tab out.

That's where more information is needed. He said it only happens in this game. If other games top out at 74c and don't display this issue. Then I doubt it's his cooler. While idle is a little high, his max temp while in a game isn't.

74c under load is very acceptable and if it is jumping up because fans arn't turning back on. That explains why the raise in temps.

I'd first verify you are not having issues in any other games/programs. Try running a CPU benchmark and see where the temps cap out at.

What sort of (clearly inadequate, or incorrectly attached, and/or without thermal compound) cooler is resulting in a 67C idle? Temps of 67C should be found only during very heaviest of loads, and even Prime95 should only result in low 70C range peaks....

Kabby lakes run hotter than normal and anything in the range of 60 to 75 when idling is normal (by that i mean windows running on desktop and nothing else). It even says that in the book that came with the chip. So I know there's no issue with the cooler..

It is replicable on demand with this one game only and only since a patch they released. It seems to be when I alt tab out of the game the fans stop then don't kick in again when I return. I've also tried it with other similar load games such as cities skylines, sim airport, civ 6 but I can't replicate it with them.

There defo is no issue with cooling because as the game loads the fans head to 80 to 100% and I can run the game for upward's of 14 hours at a time. It's literally just jumping back to desktop that causes the issue.

There are also loads of threads on here that state the 7700k runs hotter than other cpus and anything in the region of 60 is normal

Sorry every-one, I've made a mistake with my idling temps... I idle at 31 - 37 degrees. I was taking my initial measurements from straight after it peaking with this error, when the temp settles down, but this is not reflective of an idle temp..
