Problem Mounting Cooler Master EVO 212

I am trying to mount a Cooler Master Hyper EVO 212 on an ASUS Prime Z270-A/i7-7700K. I have watched several videos and believe I have done exactly the same. But when I put the cooler on the cpu, while the four corner screws line up, they are significantly above the threaded holes in the backplate screws rather than virtually touching.

You can see all the thermal paste I have spread around! Once I figure it out I will clean and reapply.

I have added photos via links to FB ... can you see them?

I believe so ... I used the dark colored longer ones through the MB and bolted on the back plate as shown in photo ... they were the ones called out by the instructions (although very obviously.)

The other new photo shows the thermal paste mess I've made but also shows the CPU install.

I kind of remember the standoffs being more tall than wide. I can check in about 45 minutes if no one else chimes in.

Hmm, unless you have the retention bracket in strangely it should be good to go. Have you tried starting one of the screws and seeing how hard it is to get the opposite corner to go?

Don't force anything, just to see if it is even possible.

There could be a manufacturing defect, but it is doubtful.

I have one of these installed on my LGA1150 board and many people have it running skylake and kabylake CPUs.

Yes, the standoffs are the taller of the two sets. When I start screwing the first one in, the opposite corner rises almost twice as high. I fear that forcing it down will damage something. The only part of building my own machines that I hate is the CPU cooler! Trouble on every single one of about five builds I've done over the past 20 years!!!

Well, I'm going to the gym and try to burn some of this irritation off! Thanks for your help so far.
