My wifi connection decreases in some areas of the house but increases in another with a signal booster

The upstairs of my house always got terrible connection from downstairs where my router is. I bought a belkin wifi signal booster and although it has bettered the connection upstairs, the connection downstairs is awful which is the closest to the router. Why is this? am i missing something or is it how its supposed to be

It's probably because your phone is connecting to the wifi booster and not the router which is closer.
Change the name of the network the wifi booster is broadcasting.
