So I have a very old (second hand) 500gb slow as [censored] and out of space hard drive (I don't know anything g about it) and before I add an SSD I want a proper hard drive and I think I have 2 options.First option: Do you think I could just leave the 500gb in there and add the new faster one then changing Windows and a couple of other things to the new hard drive. (I'm not sure if I need to back it up with this option.)

Second option: Because most of the storage is taken up with games (steam,Blizzard, minecraft,Uplay, origin you get the point) Could I just take the few files I have that are not on an online profile download to a USB stick wipe that drive switch windows over to a new hard drive (yes I still have the code) and re-download all my games and the USB stick. (Time is not a problem) Would all my progress on the games still be there?

I would rather do the second option and use the hard drive in a build I'm doing with spare parts from upgrades so I don't have to buy another one. Nothing special so it just needs to run. I have been told to get an external hard drive but I can't afford two and I really just want an internal hard drive. Sorry for the noob questions I know jack about hard drives xD

Thanks: Nathan

HDD will be slow as fuck, no way getting over this. still old 500 will go ~50 MB/s and new ones do ~250 MB/s. What you want mostly is IO so maybe something like OPTANE cache drive will do ?
as for HDD go with one of those:

should give you something you won't go insane.
have a look on:

this really makes difference.

imo, you should get a 250gb ssd and a hdd....give me a budget and i will find you a nice ssd and a hdd(1 or 2tb).
then you can use a cloning software to shift your windows to ssd. And no need to worry about game progress as your whole drive would be cloned, chances that you loose any data would be mininmal.
