Hello everyone,

I moved my SSD with a windows install from my laptop to my desktop but I get the error message "Reboot and select proper Boot Device or Insert Boot Media in selected Boot device". But if I manually choose the SSD it boots fine.

I've checked in BIOS and the SSD is listed as the first boot device and there are no other drives installed. Any help would be much appreciated,

When your desktop boots it goes to the Master Boot Record (MBR) on the SSD and finds boot information related to the laptop versus the desktop now hosting the SSD.

So the desktop does not know what to do until you manually "tell" it.

What specific options are being presented when the "Reboot and select...." question is presented?

I.e., the selection of the SSD as the boot device?

Google "Master Boot Record" for more information and details with respect to an applicable fix for your computer.

Thanks, the options are simply insert boot media and then press a key. Thanks for explaining it, so if I understand correctly then the MBR needs to be updated to correctly reflect the desktop that it is now in?

I have tried the Bootrec tool but to no avail.
I have reactivated windows so that isn't a problem
