I have two hard disks one Hitachi 500 gb which gave errors and had to be replaced by a Seagate 1tb barracuda. I have windows installed on new 1tb hard disk. So should I use the 500gb HDD and will it affect other components? Also during the boot up a message is shown: A problem with the hard drive has been detected.

As a scratch drive maybe. But it depends on the fault, if it is liable to catch on fire I would say no.

My friend had a Samsung drive that lasted three years after SMART started reporting issues. Just don't put anything on it you can't lose. He used it for games but kept his save files on his OS drive. (He also wasn't afraid to re-install his entire OS at anytime.)

One idea: after making sure everything is copied onto another, reliable, newer, HD, use this old HD for practice -- format it to rid any traces of an OS, use disk management to convert it to Logical (not Primary), place some throw-away folders and files on it, delete some stuff -- and use any and all DIY un-delete and data recovery programs at it, just for practice and learning.
