Hi, I’m getting more and more annoyed at my pc. I’m a new builder, and only 15. But here is my issue: i have an extremely old motherboard, and a fairly old graphics card. My specs are written below.

When I plug my HDMI lead into my motherboard without a gpu plugged in, I get straight into windows, but I’m obviously using integrated graphics. I plug the gpu in, I get no signal when I run the hdmi through the gpu. If I have the hdmi in the motherboard with a gpu, i simply get a message telling me I need to plug the hdmi into the graphics card, but I get no signal.

The graphics card isn’t being registered in device manager, not even as an unknown card, or under “show hidden devices”. I’ve tried uninstalling the drivers using DDU in safe mode and reinstalling the drivers, but again it’s not working.

The fans are all spinning, the 6 pins are correctly in place, and yes, I’ve even tried removing the ram, cleaning it and securely placing it in place. I’ve tried pulling the power cord out and holding the power button for 30 seconds and placing it back in, but nothing I can find is working. I did have different gpu in there at one point, (gigabyte gtx 750 ti), so i know the motherboard isn’t fried. It could be the graphics card, but it seems to be in good condition and the fans are spinning.

Honestly, ANY help would be appreciated.

A side note would be is that the BIOS is locked, and I’ve yet to remove the battery on the motherboard to wipe the password, and the LED pins on my case are not inserted correctly, but there isn’t any manuals online for a 12 year old motherboard...
Thanks for taking the time for reading this,
Ewan.

Do you have any specific on make/model/serial number of that PSU?

A couple of things come to mind initially:

1. That 6850 is a ~125W GPU, so your PSU may not be of sufficient quality, regardless of the "500W" label. A 750TI worked, but those are 75W cards. While 50W doesn't sound like a huge difference, on a poor quality PSU, it could well be the difference between functioning and not.

2. Fans spinning are not an indicator that the GPU itself (the chip onboard) is working. And, similar to point #1, the fans/LEDs on a GPU require (relaitvely) minimal power.

3. The Vostro motherboard being proprietary, may well limit what GPUs you can run - but I would expect an HD6850 to be ok if a 750TI worked just fine.

I would suggest testing the HD6850 on another system to esnrue it's functional. Testing your rig + HD6850 with a known quality PSU would be another option.

Firstly, thank you for your fast reply. If I can get this sorted, it may save me £150+ on new parts...

I’m sorry, it’s called “Novatech 500W ATX”. I can’t find a model number, although the manufacturing code is NOV-PSU500 if that’s any use, but I doubt it will be.

It’s actually impossible at the moment to check if the gpu has an issue as I don’t have a other pc. I really hope it isn’t the graphics card.. if I can’t find out soon though, I’ll have to buy a new graphics card, and knowing my luck, it’ll be the motherboard that’s the problem. Or I’ll buy a new motherboard, and it’ll be the graphics card aha.

Again, thanks for your quick response. Anything else I can do knowing I can’t fully test the gpu on another pc?

I've just realised, I haven't tried using a DVI-D to DVI-D lead instead of using a HDMI lead... I have a feeling the reason I'm getting no signal is because the old motherboard and locked bios isn't programmed to automatically use HDMI on a graphics card if that makes sense... I've heard it might work.

I'll get back to you with the results.
