I know this has been discussed a lot times almost everywhere but I just wanted to know clearly myself
IN TERMS OF STRICTLY GAMING ONLY
Is i5 really that bad against Ryzen 5 ?
And also could coffee lake be better than Ryzen?

Solution
Too bad they are still charging a premium for those overclockable chips. 6 core will help for sure, but just an opinion, someone like me who already has an R5 1600, once that is overclocked, I dare say it would be knocking on the door of the 7700k. With the extra threads, I don't think there is a reason for me to go to a 6 core i5. Looking at this video, they overclocked a Ryzen 1600 to 4ghz

If the benchmarks are to be believed, if the 7700 is stock, the r5 is overclocked, you are trading blows with the 7700k. Sure the 7700k can overclock, but at least you are in the same ballpark and you save money.

My R5 1600 was 189.99 at microcenter. For the i7 7700k, they list that for 299.99...

In my personal opinion, the are very closely matched. Me personally , I would go for Ryzen 5 due to lower price (model specific) and performance is so closely matched, even with the i5 K series of CPUs, in some Games the i5 will perform better and Ryzen in others. Ryzen will also be a bit more of a future due to having more cores/threads.

As for Coffee lake, we will have to wait and see for benchmarks/pricing to come out.

What do you think what the price would be like for the i5 range cause intel would want to compete with Ryzen...so could the prices be like Ryzen?

I don't expect the price of i5's to be much different.

I would go with the Ryzen CPUs for a couple reasons. First, price-performance ratio, Ryzen is cheaper and about the same in performance. Second, future-proof(ish), I mean this both as Ryzen having the advantage in core count and socket longevity. Intel has a terrible track record lately in changing sockets in my opinion. Although AMD doesn't exactly have a great record in this regard either with having power requirements issues/limits within sockets. If AMD decides to use AM4 for awhile, like they said they would, then upgrade opportunities in the future will be better.

Agree with the above. I remember when AM2 was out, if you had the right board, when AM2+ and AM3 rolled around, you could drop one of those cpus into your board if you had the right bios. I remember using an Athlon II x4 on an old socket AM2 board that Gigabyte had given bios updates for.

I can't comment about all that but I was more referring to the AM3+ boards that couldn't use the higher end AM3+ CPUs because of the power limitations of the boards.

Pretty much the leaked retail of the coffee lake i3's quad core prices. The i3-8350K for $182 and for $19 you could get a Cryorig M9i to run it at stock for about the same price. The Z370 would be a bit more than the B350 but its in the ball park atleast.

You didn't count the after market cooler which you have to get H7 for 30ish even for stock. You have to get over a $50 cooler or higher to get much past the boost speed. For any chance to get 5Ghz its $100 water cooler unless you get very lucky on the silicon lottery. The R5 1600 stock cooler gets you 3.7~3.8Ghz with huge performance gain at no cost.
