I know they're dozens of these but they don't exactly match my problem as they are using either water-cooling or overclocking.

On idle temps are ~35C then while gaming they shoot up to high 80's and reach 90's.

I saw a thread on checking CPU-Z for the voltage while gaming but don't exactly know how much is too high and it's hard to tell as there is no on-screen display.

I have a $40 aftermarket cooler and I know I applied a good amount of paste as people always say less is more. One thing to consider is where my rig is located, in a little close/open door section of my desk. It is pretty compact in there and i can't think of a better place to put it.

Sorry for wall of text but please if you have knowledge share some I wish to resolve this problem for the longevity of my CPU's sake.

Also I've attached a screen of MSI Afterburner display while gaming showing the temps and usages. http://

good news to everyone still wondering about this problem, i went out and found someone with more expertise than me to help me mount the cooler. Instead of using the default paste that came with the cooler we used some artic silver and also tightened the cooler much more. I now don't get temps higher than 70C!

I just want to thank everyone for being so supportive, every problem is a learning experience and hopefully by learning I will be able to help others in the future.

Not sure if your over clocking or not. Either way 90c is way too hot. First off, I would suggest that you have at least 1 intake fan and 1 exhaust fan. As far as the thermal grease goes, a pea size in the middle of the cpu is enough. It will spread evenly from the pressure of the heatsink.

Try taking it back apart and cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol and reinstalling it. Remember to kill the power source first.

If your overclocking back it off a bit and lower the voltage to the cpu. That cpu, while it can stand the heat, will degrade at those temps. They should really be no higher while gaming in the 60 to 70c range.

WAY too hot. Either your cooler is junk or most likely it is incorrectly installed. What is it and what paste did you use?

Take it off, clean the the old paste off with a coffee filter or something else that's lint free and 90% rubbing alcohol. Apply paste about the size of a pea and reinstall the cooler.

I'm at 4.6Ghz and 1.35v and I only by running 2 stress testing programs at once does my 6700K break 70C on a single core. I have a very good Phanteks PH TC 14PE air cooler.

Hmm maybe my fan isn't good quality, I will retry installing it once more before purchasing a new one, except i don't know what I could do different besides reapplying the thermal paste. My knowledge doesn't go as far as knowing what a intake and exhaust fans are, thank you for the replies none the less tho!. And i'm definitely not overclocking my cpu at the moment

Front and side fans should be intake. Top and rear fans are exhaust. Internal fans should go with that flow and not against it. The fan or fans on your CPU cooler should be blowing towards the back of your case where hopefully there is a rear exhaust fan.

The inside of my case. All fans in the picture are blowing from the front ( right side ) of the case to the rear ( left side ) of the case.

What CPU cooler do you have?

The CPU cooler I use is a CRYORIG H7 Tower Cooler. Thanks for the picture a visual is always more helpful for me. My fans are blowing in the directions you mentioned but I should note there is just a wall behind my cpu, maybe that is something?

I've attached a link to my PC to show the fan is in the right orientation. http://

I used MSI Afterburner for the On Screen Display, here is a screenshot of HWMonitor when I popped in a total war warhammer battle http://

That 1.369v is kinda high....you sure you don't have any auto overclock utilities running? Even then I'm at 1.35v and don't break 70C so there's a cooler problem. There's no way it's making good contact.

Well guys, I'm now replying via mobile phone because after reinstalling the cpu cooler my pc won't turn on haha.

I will say the thermal paste before was spread out I believe I may have tried to spread it evenly around the chip. Now what I did was place a small amount in the center and just pressed the heatsink on it like I've seen people do. Tho I'm not sure how pressed the cooler is as I am able to rotate the whole cooler a little bit.

Tho none of this matters as my pc is not turning on i will try again if I fail I'll have to take it to a shop. I'm grateful for all the replies!

I have a 520W psu that doesn't have an on/off switch.

I remember when removing the old thermal paste a piece got lost somewhere around the processor. The only thing bothering me is if I messed up mounting the cpu cooler somehow. Everything else is just as it was.

Also my gpu doesn't seem to 'click' onto the slot as I would expect it would but it's pushed in there so dont know if that'd be a problem as I tried booting without it.

So I tried out another battle and the temperatures are actually hotter now because the fans aren't spinning that fast as they were before. I'm convinced i'm not mounting the heatsink right there is no way it should reach 100C even if the fans aren't blowing.

So here come some screenshots of pictures I took while re-installing the cooler

First is the CPU after I wiped the old paste http://
Second is the heatsink connector part after I wiped the old paste http://
Third is the amount of new paste I put on the cpu http://
Lastly is a side shot of how the heatsink looks mounted on the cpu, I just thought I'd add this http://

If you guys have any knowledge to give based off those pictures please do tell, right now my last option seems to be going to a computer shop and have someone more capable do it for me.

Follow These Instructions to mount you cooler. If you do it right there shouldn't be any issues.

It wasn't the paste, Arctic Silver is actually pretty outdated and has a 100 hour cure time. The paste that came with your cooler is probably a little better but not enough to worry about.

You just weren't tightening it enough. ;)

Glad you figured it out though!
