Underclocking my CPU for better power consumption?

Hello fellow PC Enthusiasts! I underclocked my i5-4590 to 1.1GHz for an experiment and wondered whether on idle, this would reduce power consumption. I thought no because the cpu wont run on full power unless I do something intense, or constantly working on rendering and gaming but would like to make sure.

The system automatically goes to lower power states whenever it sees fit, so unless you're using the pc @ 100% load, theres no benefit really, and not worth as performance goes down drastically.
