Currently rocking an i5 4690k clocked at 4.6ghz. Wondering if an upgrade is needed. I mainly use my rig for gaming. As of now, I can run all games no problem, since I have a GTX 1070 that is also oc'd. The reason for an upgrade is for future games. Should I go for a Ryzen 7 or 5, or wait for Intel's new architecture? I could also go for a 4790k, if it's worth it.

Solution
Upgrade when you have symptoms of poor performance, not when you might have symptoms in the future. By the time that future arrives your pre-emptive upgrade will be 'old'.

Unless you have specific issues I don't see i5-2/3XXX as being quite ready yet for an upgrade 'just because', BF1 might be an example of where 4C4T is a problem, and >4C>4T would be better.
