Hello, I now have a chance to get either i5 3470 or i7 2600. However, I'm now struggling to choose one of them. I always play video games and open some applications at the same time, which one can handle the task better?

The i7 2600 costs $100 while i5 3470 costs about $86 with a 500GB HDD.

Thank you.

The 2600 is better, especialy when multitasking.

If you don't plan on upgrading stuff anytime soon, it will last you much much longer than the 3470...

Only downside of the 2600 is uhmmmm a bit higher power consumption and worse integrated graphics (which is irrelevant if you have a dedicated graphics card). :)

The intel i7 2600K @3.80Ghz has 4 cores and 8 threads compared to the i53470 @3.60Ghz 4 cores and 4 threads. The i7 has 4 more extra threads and a higher clock speed. It will last you longer so another vote that goes for the i7 2600k

The 2600 only provides PCIe2.0, the 3470 PCIe3.0
3470 has more memory bandwidth 1600MHz than the 2600 (1333MHz)

Doesn´t increase fps but can be more compatible when getting a newer graphics card with PCIe3.0
(my GTX770 weren´t running, only thing helped was replacing my i5-2400 with an i5-3470. Could be my motherboard´s BIOS as well, but didn´t get a working BIOS for that)

My main gaming rig is using a core i7 Extreme 990 with a motherboard that uses PCIe 2.0, and I still get more FPS than most people using my same graphics card on a newer system with PCIe 3.0. it's all about tweaking and overclocking

A bad or missing driver maybe?

That sounds like a motherboard problem, not getting the right bios or drivers from the manufacturer for that specific CPU and GPU witch enable them to communicate with each other.
