I've newly have a Seagate Backup Plus Hub 8TB External drive. As the moniker says, it has two 3.0 ports out front- advertised to be used for recharging mobile phones etc.

I intend to attach the drive via USB to my router and use it as a NAS.

My question is what if I connect another USB 3.0 hard disk or a USB stick to the Seagate's own USB hub ports?

Any way the network would see that second drive connected to the first?

Regards

Solution
The usb port will be sharing the power between the 8TB Hub & the other usb device.Seagate advertise these ports as for charging phones etc which don't require as much power as hdd.Connecting a device that tries to draw more power than what these ports are designed for may cause corruption during data transfer which may affect connected hdd as well as the 8TB hub.Worse case scenario may be that due to multiple unsuccessful attempts to power up the drive because of insufficient power, the internal mechanical mechanism of connected drive may suffer more wear & tear or damage thus shortening the life span of the connected hdd.

I don't think so not to mention doing this may also put both of your hdd at risk of data corruption or worse. It is always better to connect any portable hdd directly to usb port or connect it to an externally powered usb hub which comes with a power adapter to provide dedicated power to usb hub.Usb hubs without power adapter are good for low power consumption usb devices like keyboards, mouse, usb modems etc, flash drives etc.

Thanks all.

Aside, if I connect an external powered USB hub to the 3.0 on the router, can I then connect multiple powered/non powered hard drives to the hub and they can be seen as NAS units?

I am not sure as that would be a chain of usb devices & I don't know how seagate 8TB hub handles such configuration.Getting an externally powered usb hub is a good idea anyway for any future usage so there is no harm in getting one & trying though. If it doesn't work you can always use this externally powered usb hub for your present/future usb hard disks.
