Awhile back I upgraded motherboard, CPU and got an SSD. I also upgraded to windows 10 after being unable to find the key to reinstall the old version of windows 7 I had previously. I never transferred anything from the old HDD to my new SSD and just started over.

I have a nice modern PSU with chords to attach multiple hard drives, can I simply plug in the old HDD and transfer a file from it to my new SSD? Will this not be possible due to the fact the old HDD had a different version of windows? Do I need special programs or some kind of special adapter?

Should work just fine.

You may have to go into disk manager and assign a drive letter to the old disc. After that is simply going into My PC (what replaced My Computer) and then you can just drag and drop away.

Obviously turn PC totally off before installing old hard drive.

As velocity said you will need to take ownership of the files that where in your user directories.
