RAM speed at higher FPS

Hello. I am getting a GTX 1080 for 1080p 144Hz gaming, but I only have 8GB of DDR3 1600MHz RAM. How much will my RAM hold me back at high FPS? My CPU is an I7-4770K. I know 16GB is sort of becoming a standard.

Thanks.

Solution
You have two issues here:

RAM Amount - Some games, (i.e. GTAV and Witcher 3) show a marked improvement w/ 2 x 8 GB as opposed to 2 x 4 GB

RAM Speed - Some games, (i.e. F1, STALKER series) show a marked improvement (up to 11%) w/ 1600 RAM instead of 1600.

Now that's the basic part as we were just talking average fps ... but it gets more complicated. Both have greater impact on minimum frame rates. If you have SLI, again, removing a GFX card bottleneck leaves your system constrained by the next one and that can be RAM.

In each instance, you are looking at up to a 10-11% impact **in some games**

It will depend on games you play.
If OS + game uses more than 8GB of ram, then performance of the system will suffer.
If less than 8GB is used, then everything is good and you'll have no performance issues.

Do many games require more than 8GB nowadays? Hopefully I can close that gap a little with some overclocking, until I replace my RAM etc.

Thanks.

There are very few that in and of themselves will utilize more than 8, but there's other programs you have to account for; the OS, any other things like Twitch, Skype, Steam, Chrome, Discord, Spotify etc. that you would also need to account for using when you're gaming. At the moment with 4 tabs of Chrome open and Twitch and Discord running in the background, I'm sitting around 3.5GB of RAM utilization. There aren't many that hit 8+... the ones that come to mind are Arkham Asylum (rarely), modded Minecraft, and some since-patched games like Black Ops III that just ended up needing a lot of optimization. There are, however, quite a few that hit 5-6+ like GTA, Witcher 3, Fallout 4 etc., and I've personally seen some sim games like Cities: Skylines end up hitting around 6GB but these are all open world games or sim games.

Probably Arkham Knight as well. Thanks :)

What’s up ya’ll.

My system specs:

i5-4670k @ 4.2
8gb 2x4 mushkin ddr3 1600 cas 7
asus z97-a
samsung evo 850 250gb ssd
evga gtx 970 - (no overclock)
asus vg248qe - 144hz

CPU is nearly always at 100% usage with the 970 or the 1070 at 60% usage, how often i was told it was a CPU bottleneck, and how so many are proved wrong below.

I’ve always played this game with low settings across the board, zero anti ailising, 75% render resolution (@1080p), and nvidia control panel putting performance above quality (forcing AF off, performance > quality etc)

With this setup I avg around 170-190 fps. When it’s calm and chill on my screen im at 300fps, teamfights etc im as low as 150/170. Random dips BELOW 120fps.

I’ve been in the school of thought that RAM speed has negligible effects on gaming. This is and has been the case for pretty much forever. Maybe it’s just Overwatch in particular, but RAM speed has a direct correlation to FPS when attempting to push and maintain 200+ FPS.

From what I can tell, no matter the system, your RAM frequency is the bottleneck when attempting to push high frame rates, possibly in any and all games as well.

I recently acquired a gtx 1070 to put into my machine. To my disappointment, I saw at most, a 10-20 fps increase in regards to my minimums/dips and avg. Utter bullcrap, SO MAD.

I overclocked my DDR3 1600 to 2133. My lowest FPS dips went from 120 to 150.
My avg fps went from 170-190 to 190-220, and i was maintaining 240+ in many situations that i wasn’t even getting 200.

Due to the positive results of my testing, I went and bought 8gb (2x4) of DDR3 2400 C11 Corsair Vengeance Pro. I slapped it into my machine, good lord the results.

My MINIMUM FPS/DIP POINTS are now 190-200. My avg is easily 240+. I decided to do a little more testing, I just now overclocked my ddr3 2400 c11 to 2666 c12. I have yet to see my FPS drop below 240. I maintain 280+ more often than not. Im sure the FPS gains/avgs/minimum will and can continue to improve.

Im not 100% sure if this is the same for ddr4. But as far as i know and can prove, ddr3 ram speed is DIRECTLY related to maximum fps for high end machines.
