Hello I recently got better internet speed 100 Mbps connection and I realized my router doesn't seem to be able to go that high. I currently have a wrt54gl and I'm looking to upgrade to something more current. I do alot of gaming and a good amount of downloading, I do wired for gaming on my pc and wireless for my mobile devices. Any advice on some good routers would be helpful.
Thanks.

I generally try to avoid recommendations because hardware will change and someone will find this thread in the future and wonder why it does not work the same.

So with that disclaimer the router I tend to like is a asus ac56. You can get that router for about $100. The main feature that I like is it can load the asus-merlin firmware. It gives you many more features and it is a lot more stable than dd-wrt that it is based on. It also unlike dd-wrt has NAT hardware acceleration. Without nat hardware acceleration you only get about 250mbps with hardware acceleration this router can pass 700-800mbps though the wan.

My needs tend to be different if you never plan to use any advanced features then you could leave the factory...
A generic recommendation is to look at a 802.11ac router that claims 1200 or 1450. These routers are fairly low priced but are fast. Make sure you get one with gig wan and lan ports. They match the most common end devices abilities based on encoding and number of antenna. Even these maybe overkill if non of your end equipment support 802.11ac. Be careful to not get sucked into the bigger number is better trap. It does no good to buy a router that uses 4 antennas at the same time if your end devices only have 2. To a point you need cpu speed but most these mid range routers have no issues keeping up with 100m. It would be a different story if you have a gigabit internet connection, you need a very fast cpu to keep up with those.

I Usually just use newegg/amazon/cheapest online for electronics. As for my devices I have a vero4k media for streaming movies/shows from my pc up 1080p(haven't bought a 4k yet) my phone is s7 and I also have a nintendo switch. Other than those for wifi and my pc wired cuz I game on it thats pretty much it.
I'll look into what you said about what to look for but can you give me a few examples?
And for a budget its not a real big concern $200 would be kinda pushing it tho.

Asus tends to have a lot more features in its standard firmware than many other routers. Now if you wanted to go really cheap asus the rt-1200 is a good router also. It just can not run any third party firmware but basic transfer rates will easily meet your needs.

If you do not like asus tplink tends to be another good choose. They have so many models that overlap I can not keep track of them. Then again dlink, linksys etc are good routers. Avoid brands like belkin, trendnet and some of the other lesser known brands
