I generally try to avoid recommendations because hardware will change and someone will find this thread in the future and wonder why it does not work the same.
So with that disclaimer the router I tend to like is a asus ac56. You can get that router for about $100. The main feature that I like is it can load the asus-merlin firmware. It gives you many more features and it is a lot more stable than dd-wrt that it is based on. It also unlike dd-wrt has NAT hardware acceleration. Without nat hardware acceleration you only get about 250mbps with hardware acceleration this router can pass 700-800mbps though the wan.
My needs tend to be different if you never plan to use any advanced features then you could leave the factory firmware. Asus tends to have a lot more features in its standard firmware than many other routers. Now if you wanted to go really cheap asus the rt-1200 is a good router also. It just can not run any third party firmware but basic transfer rates will easily meet your needs.
If you do not like asus tplink tends to be another good choose. They have so many models that overlap I can not keep track of them. Then again dlink, linksys etc are good routers. Avoid brands like belkin, trendnet and some of the other lesser known brands
