I'm trying to do something very simple but for some reason I cant get the two computers to talk to each other.
I am able to get them to talk to each other via wifi, but I want to use an ethernet connection as that is faster.
I followed the whole tutorial here on how to connect via ethernet but it still doesnt show under my network with both wifi adapters off.
What could be the issue or what am I doing wrong?

The network doesnt show anything, even when the folders are all shared and all settings are allowing sharing.

Any problems with the steps you listed? Those should be the right things to enable. Unless you don't have MDIX in your NICs any cable should work. From what I've read it's built into the gigabit spec so the crossover cable isn't needed. (Because gigabit requires transmitting on all four pairs.) I'd double check you set everything up correct, and try a different cable.

I'll try a different cable, thank you. What should I look for in the ethernet cable?
One machine is running windows 10, the other windows 8.1.
I tried connecting it to a different computer and it still wont work.

I'm going to remove the best answer (BA). Please don't select one until the problem gets solved. People think it's been solved when they see the thread has a BA. You are welcome to select whichever post you feel was the most helpful including the one you already picked, I'm just trying to keep this open so more people show up.

Any cable should work. If any of the computers have only 10/100 NICs in them you HAVE to use a crossover cable. Don't you have a switch at home built into your router? Might be a lot easier. (You did turn off DHCP and set the IP addresses to 192.168.0.5 and x.x.x.6 or something like that right?

I'm unable to do that as the modem & router are downstairs while the server is upstairs, close to the other computers.
I just tried using two other ethernet cables but no response.
Server says "unidentified network"
while my computers says "no network access"
All sharing options are enabled.

to answer "4745454b",
Yes server is 192.168.0.1 and my ccomputer is x.x.x.2.
This is extremely frustrating why it isn't working...

Correct, I'm using a single cable plugged into the back of the computer connecting to mine which is using a Killer Wireless-n/a/ac 1535 Wireless Network Adapter

Sorry about that! Linked the wrong thing. I have a killer e2400 gigabit ethernet controller.
One weird thing is that when I hooked up both computers to each other, the server showed under networks but would not let me connect. Then I restarted both computers and it disappeared from the list of networks.
