New Threadripper system not working, Please Help!

I have built a new computer using Threadripper and so far not so good, having many issues. Windows 10 freezing completely, but updating to the latest 1703 seemed to fix most of that but still occasionally happens. But some programs still don't work right, they freeze, or like 3dsmax it shows nothing in the viewports. I cannot enter my Ram speed for the Ram in bios, or else the computer will not post. I have ddr4 3200, but have to run it at the default 2133. I found out that my Ram is not on there QVL (Qualified Vendors List.) So I wonder if that can be the reason for all these issues. So far the system is unusable for work.

Here is the specs:
Threadripper 1950x
Asus ROG Zenith Extreme
G.SKILL TridentZ Series 64GB (8 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Intel X99 Platform Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C14Q2-64GTZ
850 Pro SSD 2TB
Titan X Maxwell
EVGA 1600 PSU
Windows 10

You should check every memmory stick at time and run a memtest. Because it looks like one of the sticks is not good. If all memtest occur without errors. You know that the sticks are all good.

Ram speed change is difficult one.
It is possible to set it to 2900
but you need to overclock setting to D.C.O.P.

Above that is not completely supported.

Don't forget to install AMD chipset drivers and the ryzen energy plan. Half of the cores didn't work because of the windows 10 energyplan

Are you saying to run memtest86 or just run the windows memory diagnostic? never had to run a memory test before.

It says 3200 is supported, but didn't work, the manual for the ROG Motherboard is horrible, has no information in it, and is missing so much.

I installed the AMD Chipset Drivers from the Asus ROG Zenith extreme website. Should I get them from AMD instead? I didn't see a Ryzen energy plan, is that in the chipset driver? and does that also work for threadripper?

Thanks for the help larsweb4!

@larsweb4

I downloaded the AMD Chipset from AMD themselves and found that it was newer and also contained the Ryzen Balanced power plan in it. The crap Chipset Driver from asus didn't have that and it was older. After installation so far 3dsmax now works right! thank god.

Running a memory test right now on the ram using Windows memory diagnostic.

One other thing I found strange is temps. I have a Corsair Hydro Series H115i Extreme, and I took it off my Intel I replaced with this Cpu,motherboard, and Ram. I wiped down the coldplate with 90% alcohol to clean it, then applied Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut for maximum cooling. The threadripper 1950x still hits 85 degrees without overclocking, That just seems really high. The 3930k it has replaced was hitting 64 degrees with the same AIO with artic silver thermal compound.

Really, I had no clue. Haven't read that anywhere, actually out of the reviews I've seen online the review companies where saying that it runs really hot, so I just figured it was a hot chip but didn't think this hot. That's great to know though. The lack of info on this because it's so new makes it hard to work with and setup. Especially since the info even in the motherboard manual sucks. They have pictures of the board and point out certain stuff that is not even the same board. I tried twice to OC and it won't post after, and one of the times I used the boards 4ghz preset and that still didn't work. wonder if my non QVL memory has something to do with that.

With this fact that it runs with a +27c offset, what is the max temp I can run with OC or what should I look out for? I will be running this for long times with rendering. The last Intel 3930k chip I OC'd to 4.25ghz and it ran at 65c the whole time. It think for the 1950x I saw 4.1ghz maybe 4.2, running this chip stable on some review.

Thanks for the help mdd1963

you have lots of gb memory. run a couple of memtest86. if no error occurs in 2 hours. then you now the hardware is fine

look on youtube how to set bios for asus rog. i dont think it,s possible to run memory on full speed for now. but 3000 mhz is possible.

ryzen power plan is in the chipset driver. after install i believe you still have to set windows power plan to ryzen plan. lots of people only can use half of the processor because of balanced energy plan

Downloaded memtest86, going to run it when I get back to the office later.

I looked all over YouTube and could not find one video on my motherboard bios setup. If you know of one please share it.

You was absolutely right, after installing the correct chipset driver from AMD, not Asus, fixed many issues and also gave me the Ryzen power plan. I switched to that and all cores now seem to render at full 100%, and my temps dropped from 85-86c to 80c.

Thanks bud.

I used HWMonitor and that's where I saw 80c, maybe it has it in a different location, I was reading Node 1 and Node 2 which seemed to be the CPU. That is really awesome if it is 53c, can't wait to figure out a good overclock.

Running Memtest86 right now, it's 40% through, no errors.

This is steady temps at rendering for 6min. What should I be looking at the Nodes or cpu temp for accurate cpu temp? Can't find a guide or info on it. Going to replace my h115i Fans with Noctua ippc-3000 fans, that should better the temps. I still cannot overclock, no matter what I try it crashes, will not post, comes up and says kernal issues or other issues can't load windows, or freezes windows. Maybe I should try the Ryzen Master for overclocking, but I head Bios Overclocking is better, is that true?

I just tried AMD Ryzen Master utility for threadripper to do the overclocking in windows instead of bios to see if that helps. I set the mhz to 4000 and then the minute I hit the apply button windows instantly freezes. What the hell! can't get anything to work

For some reason I'm not getting very good speed anymore, I'm only getting in the 2800's-2900's in cinebench, and when I'm rendering you can see all the cores are being throttled down in 3dsmax, they are only rendering at average of 3.2ghz. What is causeing this? my temps look good.

I can't remember what software was being used when I saw both temps reported, sorry, but, once , the math was quite easy when as you could see both temps, 60C and 87C, which makes the math quite easy. :)

I'd assume AMD's Overdrive can now monitor temps correctly on TR4 cpus?

I never used AMD's Overdrive before, This is my first AMD Chip in like 15-20years so I'm kinda new to there stuff. But I don't understand all these issues I'm having and why the lower clock speeds and Cinebench scores. Seems like it's throttling down the speed, but temps look good. Is there something in the motherboard bios like a temp cutoff that I can change, I can't find anything. I was getting a consistent 3044 Cinebench score, I don't know what I changed but now it's mostly in the 2830's.

Well, Pulling out the ram and re-seating it fixed the issues, still can't use the 3200 setting in bios, but 2880 and 2933 worked, might have been able to go higher but I just left it at 2880.

The overclocking is still an issue, I saw many people OC to 4.0 and 4.1, but if I go any higher than 3.8 the system freezes during rendering. At 3.8 temps are at around 70-73, at 4.0 temps are at around 85.

Hwinfo64 is the only accurate monitoring software currently. Please don't touch AMD Overdrive, that was created for FX-series and will give you major headaches or possibly stop windows from loading. The overclocking utility is Ryzen Master, please use the latest version from amd's own website, along with the chipset driver package found there

Yes I have been using Hwinfo64 after someone told me the same thing. It's a good utility. I had no interest in using AMD overdrive, and didn't really like the Ryzen Master utility, I like overclocking in the bios. After the newest Bios release, everything has been working great and correctly, so that's where all the issues came for the Ram Ghz and such. The system runs awesome right now, I'm using a H115i to cool the CPU and saw a review where the Specifically made Threadripper AIO's will do up to 20c lower. So looking forward to getting one of them when they are out.

@itzjonjon69,

Make sure to install bios 601, that fixes a lot of issues with Ram. Also install the chipset driver from AMD not Asus, Asus uses an older one. And make sure in windows you set power settings to AMD Ryzen Balanced.
